LS1 swap, is it really much harder then the LT1?
alright guys, why is the LS1 swap so frawned upon? Is it really that much harder todo than a LT1 even though you can buy the motor mounts, the crossmeber and all the stuff needed?
I mean i used to want a good LT1 and stuff make it get atleast 320HP, but the ls1 puts out 350HP(320 was underated) stock and prolly wont be much more money cuase the LT1 is gonna have to be modded to get those power outputs, but then fuel economy goes to ****.
I can get a low milage LS1 for $950($1000 with tranny) at the local junk yard, the motor mounts and crossmember for $249, and i dont know about the wiring harness just yet, would i need a new one or can the old be used?
That would mean fro the most important parts so far i'd need $1249 bucks. But i need fuel lines, ps lines, ps reservoir, radiator hoses, prolly a vats bypass, and some notching to do. Since notching is free and vats bypass is $10 on ebay that would be clsoe to $325.
What else would i need? I knwo the swap is complicated but i'm open to any suggestions.
The LS1 is a good engine as long as i get a good one, some of them came with bad oil pumps and the such.
Thanks,
Shane

That is cheap for an engine and transmission. I would get it. Now that the mounts are available from spohn the difficulty level is about the same.

cool i've been looking at a lot of liturature on these enigne now that i discovered the public library, so cool. I think the LS1 swap will be a much better bet fro keeping fuel effiency in ahigh power car.

one more quick question-
Everyone reccomends the new harness, is there a way i can use the old one? I am gonan get it reprogrammed, so vats isn't a worry really i just need to know if its mandatory.
Does it just make it look cleaner(ie newer wires), or is there something i dont know about? Wouldn't it use the relays i got anyways?
Thanks,
Shane

Orrrrrrrr, you could buy the motor, sell off the intake and harness, buy a carbed intake from eldebrock, drop her it without having to worry about the harness and be good to go lol....

You could build your own harness by blending an LS1 harness with your factory one. I think the reason most people shy away from the LS1 is because of cost. If you can get one for that cost- go for it. I can't find one around here for less than $2000 plus they want another $1000 for a transmission. I am planning on putting one in my 87 when I have the money, so I have been doing research. Most people I have read about usually disable the VATS by having it programed out as well as some of the other LS1 specific emissions devices. I knew there was an intake to car an LT1 but I have never seen one for an LS1.

well i wanted to blend in the LS1 harness but i'm not the best at wiring, i mean if i know what stuff goes to i can do it but i dunno if the wiring in our cars is well marked off. Are secific colors supposed to goto a certain thing? It might be a little easier if i was able to see diagrams of the PCM we got and the wires comapred to the LS1 ECM. Might make it easier to put together in my head. I might get somebody to help me do it becuas esomeone was gonna come up from tampa(i live in jacksonville) and help me out with the LT1 swap idea. I dunno if i want the LT1 anymore. SO mnay benifits to the LS1. They will both stat tlo bay back money spent with gas saving so there is a big plus.
I might just need to save up the $2500 needed for the swap, and just try it. Cant hurt naything. I'll eventually get it done.
Thanks,
Shane
P.S. there is no possible way to carb a LS1, there is no manifold nor manner to go about doing that. Completely different design engine, Period.

Performer RPM LS1 Carbureted Manifold
This powerful new manifold is designed for the popular Chevrolet LS1 (5.7L) small-block V8 originally used in 1996 and later Corvettes and 1997-02 Camaros and Firebirds. It also fits the Corvette ZO6 engine and any other Gen III engines including the LM7 (5.3L), LR4 (4.8L), and LQ4 (6.0L). The Performer RPM LS1 manifold allows the use of a carburetor on these originally computer-controlled engines, offering maximum power and a broad torque curve, providing optimum performance from 1500 to 6500 rpm. This manifold includes a unique electronic Timing Control Module made by MSD® which works with OE sensors to fire the “distributorless” ignition system and offers a choice of three timing curves. We have also included a special throttle and trans bracket that works with 700R-4 and Turbo 350 transmissions making the LS1 engine an easy retro-fit into any muscle car, street rod or marine application.

Wow, thats one of the most retarded things I have ever heard. I mean im all for fuel injection, but to bash on carbs like that....thats true ignorance.

I mean new things. Carb gay way to TBi which gay way to PFI, its a cycle, wonder what will put PFi out, dunnop what the next step is, but for sure carb is gone.
