So I dropped my car off at Hawks Third Generation today.......

I finally decided it was time to upgrade from the 305. I took my car to Hawks to have them install a LS1/6 speed. They are also replacing the rearend, upgrading the suspension, and installing new exhaust. After talking with them and seeing their '91 Formula LS1, I knew this was definately the right decision.

Too much to say

Im having serious timing issue's with my setup. I tried revving to 3k and seeing the advance, looks around 20 total or so. Wonder why kind of power loss there is between 20 and 30-32, any guess's ?

Yeah, I am curious on the price of having someone else do it. I know my brother is thinking about doing this LS1/6-speed swap next year in his 89 Formy but he is doing it himself and collecting the parts himself.

I dont know much about the swap. But it cannot be too hard. May take some time to figure ECM components/wiring harness down, but after that its still just a sbc that needs a few newer things on her

Yeah, I'm hoping to do this swap this summer. I'm going all out with it though. I'm shooting for a LS1/4L60E combo and all 4th gen interior so that way I don't have to cut and splice harnesses. I can just use the under hood and dash harness for my car.

I'd like to swap in a T56 but my fiance said if I did the swap with an auto, she wouldn't mind driving my car sometimes and letting me drive hers (and I've almost got her talked into a new GTO... :hail: )

I wish I was rich. Good thing I could afford to do the swap myself.

I don't really want to get into the details on the price, but I will say I think it is a really good deal. The price on these types of conversions can vary so much depending on what you want done to the car. They offered me choices from a basic engine and trans swap to a full race setup with tubular K member, coilovers, power rack and pinion, etc. If you talk with them I'm sure they can give you more detailed prices.
I will try to get pics as soon as I can.
Hey flyinlow, I agree, we will definately have to run them.

Doh!

The whole point of posting was to ask you about how long will they have your car?

They told me it would take 4 to 6 weeks. I'm not really in a big hurry since I have something else to drive.
I actually live in South Carolina, not North Carolina.

actually the LS1 is absolulty NOTHING at all like a standard SBC (GENI).

its quite a bit more involved than bolting it in, and wiring it up.

Yup, the LS1 is a totally different breed of motors. It's not
even close to a SBC. It's got 6 bolt mains, composite intake,
all aluminum heads/block. The bolting in and wiring up is
all custom! Nothing will bolt in directly! You will have to buy the
custom motor mounts/trans. crossmember or fab up your own!
You may even have to use the truck vortec coils on the P/S just
to clear the heater/evap. box. The fuel system under the hood
will also have to plumbed differently and may need to use a
different pump.

Yes, this is true. Some one here had done it years ago.
I believe sometime around the year 2000? Back then,
the guy had to fab up his own motor mounts and cut
a notch in the engine crossmember to clear A/C. But,
I think he decided to leave out the A/C. He used the
LS1 front engine accessories. He also had to have custom
exhaust done from manifolds back. Also had the ECM
reprogrammed to eliminate 02 sensors and fuel tank pressure
sensor. It's a white 1987(?) IROC fully loaded. His plate reads
"LS1IROC" or something like that.

Funny how I remember his swap, but can't remember who
it is?

EDIT: FOUND him! It's LS1 IROCZ. His car is yellow, not white.
Just found his article on the LS1 swap in this engine swap
board.
