Fuel for the LS1?

Alright guys I need a little bit of help with this one. I have all the old fuel system out of the car now, lines and tank. I had to pull the tank becaues the pump for the V6 would not come on, hardwired. I wanted to see what was up, and it also needs to be cleaned out.
My question is, can fuel be pulled through the old V6 pump even with it not hooked up? Probably not right?
If not, can I have a bung welded on the bottom of the tank, then run a line to a new aftermarket pump, then on to a regulator, then motor? And also, can I use the old return line going to the top of the tank?

If I'm way off here, somebody please point me in the right direction. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I want to get this out of the way because the new motor and tranny mounts are on the way, and I need to get the tank back in before I put another rear under there.

I am not sure what you are asking. Was your V6 FI? Sice you have the fuel system out I would convert it the the 4th Gen style setup. Otherwise get a TPI donor and use that setup.

There is a company out there that makes factory replacement lines but I forget the link. Someone here should know it.

Yeah the car was a 2.8FI V6.

I just was wondering if I could put the bum fuel pump back in the tank, and then draw fuel through it via an aftermarket Walbro pump mounted outside of the tank?

But I see Walbro also makes an in-tank pump for the 4th gen LS1's. It's called the 340 I think. Guys on another board are praising it, and its supposed to be good to 700hp with the "hot-wire" kit. Does anyone know if the 3rd and 4th gen in-tank pumps are interchangable? Meaning, will this (340) pump fit in my 3rd gen tank.? Or am I gonna have to get a 4th gen tank also.?

Thanx for the reply.

Just get a Holley in-tank pump, the 3rd and 4th gen pumps are not interchangeable as I understand it.

Stock units may not be but a lot of aftermarket ones are. Holley lists theres for any LT1, LS1 or TPI set-up with the same PN. I belive Granatelli does as well.

That makes sense then. I knew the stock ones weren't, wasn't sure about the aftermarket.

Thanx guys.

I'm going to order the Walbro 340, if it dosent fit the 3rd gen tank, well then I'll just go to the J-Yard and snag a 4th gen tank.

I'll let ya know how it goes. Thanx again.

Walbro makes a pump that is for 3rd gens. They make a 255lph and a 190lph pump.
