Determine Most Common Swap

There has been talk about which is the most common engine swap in 3rd gens. I am not going to include 305 or 350 to another Gen I SBC, just because.

(For the odd-ball 4 cyls, we'll include you with the V6's.)

Oh, yeah, forgot to say: If you're thinking about it but haven't done it, you don't count yet so DON'T VOTE!

Next to the typical 305->350, it seems to me like the 6->305/350 is the most commonly posted and talked about. How many actually pull it off, I cant say though.

Mine was just 305->350

I'd say the most common is 305 >350, but you didn't include that.

I'd say the V6 - -> Gen 1 SBC. That seems like my most common swap in past years. My Camaro, Regal, Monte Carlo, 2 trucks have all been swapped. Then I got broke and sold one to buy the other lol. Or, in the case of the Camaro, totalled it.

So I'm the only one going from V6 to Gen III so far? The motor will be in there in a matter of hours. But thats the easy part.

The v6 swap is great. You do not have to change the springs. The LS1 is slightly lighter than the v6.

consider yourself kicked

THe LS1 weighs slightly more than the 3800 Series II. And that weighs more than the 2.8/3.1.

http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/fbody/weights.htm

maybe also include teh 2.8/3.1 ~3.4 swap

Woops, I need to put my foot in my mouth then.

EDIT: Wait a minute, just read that post, then the ls1 is heavier :P.

Obviously, not many that have done a "real" swap have voted. But, of those that did, almost half started with a V6, and very few have BBC's (and I know there are a lot more BBC's out there than responded).

I'd like to see more responses, we'll try to keep this going for a little while longer.

Ahhh The Memories

The 85 started out and lived most of it's life as a lowly V6. Within 1/2 hour of me driving it home the boogie started and it took a year to make it work right. Plans are now in order to finally finish building the 402 big block that has been on my stand for about 4 years.

So the biography for the 85 0-127,328 V6 and 127,328-127,371 V8

I didn't include a choice for multiple swaps. But, you haven't done the BBC yet, so you couldn't vote for it, anyway.

My V6 car had 133k on it when I dragged it home. The donor car had 123k. I swapped the entire dash from the donor car, so I "reset" the clock back 10k. The mods were done at 141k. It's at 162k now.

If the '57 gets something bigger, the idea is to put the 396 in the Camaro. But, I won't be able to do that until the Camaro is emissions-exempt, which will happen when it's 25 years old (under current Colorado law). I could do it one year sooner since emissions is only due every 2 years, but I'm not sure I want to push it (or I'll be able to swing the engine for the '57 by then).

It's more of a "switch" than a "swap".

But, it's coming close, to be sure, especially if externally balanced.

Ready for this one? I swapped in an '87 LB9 over the summer...
Replacing the '86 LB9 that blew.

My dad wasn't willing to pay for an L98 swap since he isn't into cars at all... The only reason he bought me the (used/53k ) LB9 is so that i'de stop asking him for rides everywhere and because putting it in would be a "great learning experience" for me...

Luckily that was last summer, and dad isn't the money source anymore... the L98 swap is already being saved up for

BTW - TECHNICALLY, i'de count this as V8 --> Third Gen, wouldn't u agree?

i dont remeber the engine codes right now but... isnt LB9 a 305 V8 ???? besides they dont consider a 305 - 350 a swap. a SB to BB is a swap to them..

91: 305 -> 406

but of course none of that counts.

V-6 to Gen 1 SBC completed here.
I know of at least two who would vote for the Gen 1 SBC->V-6 swap if it were listed.
