overheating problems

I recently dropped a lt1 v8 in my 86 z28 and its running real hot. What should i do switch it to a 160 or 180 although i think it has a 180 in it already. Will the 160 be bad in the winter or screw the motor up.

160 will be fine in the winter. Heater won't work quite as well, but still blows plenty hot.

I would get your radiator rodded out. I'm running my stock '92 radiator and a dual fan setup from a Z28. With a 160 thermostat, the car NEVER gets about 170, even with the a/c on. In traffic, it might get up to 180, but never higher than that.

Check to make sure all the air is bled out of the system and that you have a good coolant mixture.

*Edit* Oh yeah, what do you call real hot?

If you are using your thirdgen radiator I would take it to a radiator shop and have them rod it out. That alone did wonders for my cooling system. Then, make sure all the air is bled from the system. Make sure the coolant line that goes from the back of the heads along the passenger side of the intake is hooked up, and make sure you have a good coolant mixture.

I think the fourthgen cars are actually set to turn the fans on at 235, that may be the normal temperature. What fan setup are you running? One problem I had was I was only getting 11 volts of charge from my alternator causing my fan not spin as fast as it should making me over heat.
