another v6 to v8, teach me!
ok guys, got a 91 camaro RS which I bought originally for the ground effects to put on my 87, well now i just kept the 91. it has a good old what... 3.1litre v6 or something? dont know dont care, I would have cared if it was the... 4.3 litre I think, cuz then I woudl have to find a damn tranny too. anyways I have a 400 sbc which I just got bored out and have to go pick up tommorow and building it up hopefully for early summer. should have 425 hp minimum. and the tranny will be either a 700r4 or 200r4. my question is what do I have to do? i've started to take some stuff off the v6, but its collecting dust again cuz i haven't touched it for awhile. just rip it out? take all the unessicary wiring with it? I had the interior out, but now i put it all back in, and frankly dont want to rip it out again, I'm saying this because I'm worried that you guys will tell me that I'm going to ahve to rip my dash apart to get th the ECM. because preferably I would like all computer stuff, and wiring gone, and air bag system. if anyone has done this fill me in... write me a short story. do I need the ECM for anything? the ignition tubler? (cuz of the special key) any parts I should keep off of the v6 to put on the v8? eg power steering, alternator, oil sendign unit etc. do I need differnet engine mounts? and, springs, anyone got any old v8 front springs before they lowered they're car with aftermarkets?

Here's the short story you've been asking for. definately will need the v8 springs. The motor mounts will need to be moved forward. You should do this while the springs are out. You may have a problem getting the springs to compress without a motor in the car. As the spring is jacked into place you end up lifting the whole car. I had two "large friends" sit on the fender to make up for the missing motor. You will mos likely have to take the fuel pump out of the tank or add a regulator to bring the pressure down to a carb fiendly 5- 7 psi. As for the engine harness you don't wan't to just hack it. I think of you remove the pass side kisck pannel you can unplug the harness from the ecm. The other part of the harness goes in the driver side firewall there is one bolt holding it there. You need to keep the wires for the engine fan and heater motor and wiper motor. You also will need the wires that run from the starter. They are for powering the interrior/lights/heater ect. The purple one is for the starter selinoid. The chip ,vats, in your key will disable the start circuit if that system isn't working this is done throug a relay in the wire to the sarter selinoid, you may have to bypass the relay. I'n not sure i did my swap in an 86 , no vats. You need to keep the wire for the tach, you will need a v8 tach, if equiped and oil/ temp guages. The power wire for the coil on the v6 can power the v8 coil. You will either have to wire the electric fan all the time or install a switch inside. Both are easy to do. The fan relay is activated by a ground from the ecm. Either run the switch to ground or ground it all the time it should still turn off when ignition off. You'll need exaust, v8 radiator, and v8 700r4 v6 won't bolt up. Your stock driveshaft should fit. I wouldn't recomend keeping the stock rear. Thats all I can think of right now there may be a few little things I missed.
The moral of this story is buy a v8 car w/ blown motor to put your 400 in. I've done a v6 to v8 swap and a 305 to lt1 swap and the v8 to v8 was much easier, and thats my 2 1/2 cents

the stock rear end on the car should be just fine it will actually have a better gear ratio than a stock v8 camaro does id leave the rear alone in the car

Get rid of the v-6 radiator, the hose outlets are on the wrong side, and wont cool nearly as good as a nice aluminum one. And the security system will still work after the swap too.

Say what? Keep the v6 radiator. If you have a 91-92, thier the exact same radiator as the v8's. Want proof?

Last few posts in that thread is my V6 radiator using a V6 fan on a LT1. Coolant stays at a constant 209-211 degrees at idle and that was a 30-45 minute idle test and this is not through the gauges but through datamaster.
Please try to read up before you post something like that.

The part about the V6 radiator was already stated in the sticky. About the only things the sticky didn't cover that's been asked are VATS & air bags. I'm afraid I don't have any help there.
The ECM doesn't get in the way of anything. I don't understand why people are so bent on removing it. If you think you're saving weight by doing it, a week on Atkins would remove more.
