What 350 to look for?
Hello,
I have an '86 Trans Am that I got as a parts car with my daily-driver 86 TA. The seller ripped out the 305 TPI, computer, and wiring. Since I live in Canada, and a TPI setup is retardedly expensive to gather up where I live, I'd like to chuck a cheap carb'd small-block in.
My question is, what kind of cheap 350 small-block should I be on the lookout for? If I buy from a junkyard or from a private seller, are there any specific engines(ex. from truck, thirdgen, etc.) that I should look for? What kind of price for a running 350 is a decent price to pay? Thanks again,
-Dustin

Find one with a four bolt main. I got mine from a piece of **** 1985 and rebuilt the entire thing for my 88. Everything except the block and crank is new. The price will depend on whether you want it running or not, just make sure the block and heads are intact. New heads will run at least $700. I unfortunately, had to get new steel heads, my iron ones were cracked, easy $800.

Is it going to be dropped in as-is, or are you going to rework the engine after you get it?
If you want 4 bolt mains, check out truck engines, they are most commonly there.
