oil fiter adapter

I installing my new ZZ4. The ZZ4 did not come with a oil fiter adapter, so I had to scavenge it from my old motor. The problem that I am having is I can't remember which way it bolts in. There are two ways in which it will bolt in. Does it matter? Can it bolt in either way?

It really doesn't matter which way it goes in, but I like to place the by-pass valve opposite of the oil pump supply port.

Just a friendly warning. It is fairly rare but the bypass valves can go bad. I trashed a $2200 short block when my bypass valve broke allowing unfiltered oil to circulate during the critical break-in period. Competition products sells them new for $6.95. Cheap insurance, for sure.

Another option that I personally use is plugging the bypass valve. You can pop off the retaining plate, disgard both the spring and plate. Then tap the hole for the appropriate NPT plug. I believe it's 3/8". Thread in the plug with permanent Loc-Tite.You have to change the oil regularly and I highly recommend a K&N oil filter or equivalent that can flow lots of oil. This insures every drop of oil through your engine will go through the filter before traveling through your motor. I don't recommend this method for places with harsh winters where your oil becomes sluggish.
