LT1 Swap questions
LT1 Swap questions
ok some background first CAR = 85Z T-5 with LG4 (STOCK)
so here are some questions
1. using a 96 LT1 with a 95Z M6 computer with my T-5 will I use a TPI throttle cable, my carb cable or a 93 LT1 cable?
2. Im carbed currently, with LT1 being FI would I need to pick up a return hardline for fuel from a TPI car?
3. my speedo is cable driven, so what do I do with the VSS??
all the help is appreciated, thanks

1. 92 Z28 TPI cable is what I used.
2. Im pretty sure you will need the extra hardline and new fuel pump.
3. Believe you'll need some sort of VSS buffer box they sell (dakota digital?) not too sure on this because I had VSS to begin with, im pretty sure someone can help you out on this one.

You'll definitly need a return line since FI pumps push way more volume than the injector use and it has to recycle. The thing about LT1's is that they need different fuel lines (kind of extensions which are different than the stock TPI feed/return to the rails). You'll need a FI pump also.
LT1's also require remote thermostats on our cars (which is like 65 bucks) no biggie.
The LT1 manifold has to be converted since it is distributorless type of sytem. There are various places to buy retrofit models or you could modify your own.
I'm not totally positive on this stuff since I researched it acouple years back, but it should give you a little bit to start your own research.
Might check out this site too if you haven't already.

HUH???
. I don't think he is talking about the intake swap. You need new fuel lines from the hard lines to the fuel rails yes. But there is no modification to be done on the LT1 intake.
. THe distributor on the LT1 is the optispark and its run on the crank shaft. I think your referring to the LS1 as the distributorless engine and that doesn't require manifold modification either.

ahh I misread I was thinking he wanted just to do a intake and computer swap in for some reason. Anyways that site might still be ok to check it out and see how they ran the fuel lines and stuff.
Here's the link to the fuel rails to the TPI hard lines.

For VSS, I swapped in a newer gauge cluster. Just have to hook up the right wire(s) for it now.........
Sorry if I wasn't clear, yes the WHOLE LT1 is going in.
So that is good to know I need the hard lines, so ill grab those.
As for FI pump I have a 99+ LS1 plastic tank complete with fuel pump wiring harness and even blackbox (charcoal canister?)
so extra fuel hardline, and then of course connecting up the lines to the rails and to the new tank.
Thanks
Anyone know about the VSS?? lots of info on that would be useful.

Not sure on the ls1 Fuel tank, but I don't think you can use the LS1 fuel pump either because as far as I recall there is no return line on the LS1.
If you want to keep your cable speedo, the simplest way to connect the VSS is use the Autometer sender that has a cable throughput and connect that to the Dakota Digital box to step it up to what the PCM is looking for. I'm still looking into other options but that seems to be the best way so far.

Such as a 91-92 cluster? will that cluster fit in my dash or will I need a whole new dash?

Believe if you use the new speedo, you will need the dakota box if you keep your T-5, but unless your t-5 has the fitting for the VSS, I think you will have to put one in. If you upgrade to a T-56 or 4l60E, it will not be necessary.
ok Ill have to check if my tranny can take a VSS then, im pretty sure it can because it is the same NWC-T5 that is used all the way up through the 92 year in V8 RS's
unless someone can clarify that.
so on the other side where can I pick up a dakota box?
Edit - discussed with a friend and he was saying that all carb cars have return lines as the charcoal canister would purge it back to the tank.
I can head and check my car till later, anyone know off hand if this is true?

If you have a NWC T-5, I wouldn't even try to put that behind the LT1. Get a WC T-5 already equipped with VSS, or better yet get a t-56 or tremec TKO.

but that is besides the point (even if I do grenade the tranny) some the later years had VSS so as a short term solution I could get it working behind my current tranny.
heheh very short term if I take it to the track ;D
