Bye bye 2.8 hello v8 tpi
Not sure on the year or anything but today the guy around the corner from me ( who has a 11 second 79 camaro and a clean rs with a carbon fiber hood etc) knocked on my door and asked of i wanted to buy a motor.
I went and looked at it and its a tpi motor, trans , ecm and all. Just need the wiring harness that goes to the inj.
ALL FOR $300!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll spare you the long story of why hes selling it. Needless to say i can not lest this go , friday im picking it up. My question is i know the basics, the motor mounts, the rad, and obviously if im keeping the tpi injection i need the wire i mentioned. My question is anything else you guys think i should be aware of?
Thanks.

you did what? ,went from v6 to v8 carb or tpi to carb?
The carb option is really so simple compared to the tpi setup with the vats issue. Plus the carb gives more upper end power from what i have read. Plus im so tired of all these sensors etc.

I've read that. Sometimes you forget the little things, something might not be included in the sticky. Believe me i hate it when someone askes
"what do i gotta do to do a v6 to v8 swap"
Im wondering if a carb is a better option. Im wondering whats everyones opinion on carbed instead of the tpi? etc.

Why would you want to go carb when you already have the FI intake? Thats crazy. Besides the TPI wiring harness is not much different than the v6, infact I used a v8 wiring diagram to do my swap. Just go TPI.

a v8 rad, the starter, motor mounts, even the air tubing and filter box with a k&n. AND i didnt even pay him for it yet!
BUT
I am missing the wiring that goes from the ecm to all the sensors etc. When i look for it online its like $200-$300!!!!!!
In no way am i complaining, i still got a great deal! But its either i pay for the harness or go with carb right?

Check car-parts.com. Unless your really into carbs, there is no reason you shouldn't spend the extra 100-200 dollars on a wiring harness. You'd probably end up paying the same amoutn to buy a carb intake and carburator/filter, not to mention you may need to change the throttle cable and fuel pump and get a regulator.

you would spend more then 300.00 just to change it to carbed
carb= 220 at the least new
intake= at least 100
fuel pump= 40 for a cheap one
new gaskets= 20
theres theres 380 there and thats with out tax or shipping
the only way i would switch to carb is if your going for performance

if your unsure if you will be able to do the tpi swap yourself you shouldnt be i would try and find a harness that you need at a salvage yard somewhere there are plenty tpi camaros in the junkyards man just go lookin around and see if you can find one before you jump the gun and sell a good tpi for a carb and intake set up you will regret it later i think.....

Id take any reasonable offer. Not trying to make alot out of it, just trying to help out with the cost of the stuff i need to buy.
Or a trade.

wow what a find.. ive been searching boards allover for this..
ive got an 88 bird' with 2.8L and i wanna put my 350 from my 76' bird in there.. what other mods did u have to do?
New rearend?
is there conversion motor mounts available?
drive shaft shorting? lenthening?
what about beefing up the suspension? because i heard somwhere that the fbodys that came with v8s and t-tops had some extra support somwhere?
wow this is cool i wanna dive right into my swap now

uhm , no the rear stays.
Unbolt the v6 mounts throw them away. If you look right infront of the v6 mounts you'll see the holes for the v8 mounts.
I have the srive shaft from the car my v8 came out of, its the same size as the drive shaft thats in my car now so that stays.
Sub frame connectors are a good idea no matter what motor is in your 3rd gen, but also some people change the front springs once they drop in a v8 because the v8 is a little heavier.
Its not that hard of a swap really. Also my car has an electric fuel pump for the FI, so ill need a adjustable fuel pressure regulator so the carb isnt getting 45 lbs psi!
Uhm, a home made or after market lock up switch for the tq converter if you like. Theirs a sticky at the top. It explains alot.

So far. I got $300 for the TPI stuff which is what i paid for the complete motor and trans. I spent about $300 on a carb adapter,
plugs,wires,cap,rotor,oil,antifreeze,gaskets,throttle bracket,
alt bracket and other stuff.
If i didnt get alot of the stuff needed to do the swap from the guy i got the motor from I could have easily spent double what i have.
The motor will have a new edelbrock performer rpm intake with a new holley 650.
From the manifold to engine surface to the top of the carb is 10 inches. A friend and I measured and it looks like i have 12 to play with before anything will hit the hood. Ill probably need a drop base air filter.
Im waiting on summit to send me my afpr then im ready to pull the half dead 2.8.
