anyone ever use a 4 cylinder turbo mill in a 3rd gen

a friend of mine who was into fords got me hooked on turbo power

I had an 84 firebird with rebuilt 350 I thought it was fast

he had a 2.3 turbo in an 88 thunderbird stock I wasn't very impressed

then he got webtv and found free mods via the internet

home made boost controller and a K&N filter and his little 4 banger was a beast

I ended up selling that firebird due to gas mileage

I always wanted to take a ford 2.3 turbo and swap it into a 3rd gen--lots of parts in the junkyard for cheap and lots of aftermarket support

now I have an eagle talon and think that one of these mitsubishi turbo 4 bangers would be nice in a 3rd gen also more hp than the ford and better breathing (16 valve )

not thinking of this for a drag strip beast or anything just a daily driver that gets decent mpg and has some *****

oh well all my money is going into my new found 89 TTA haven't even driven it yet

As I was reading through your post I was going to recommend the 3.8T swap as a more viable option, but reading even further I find out you have a TTA. Trust us, you do not need to do any engine swaps. Your TTA is powered by the same beastly 3.8 Turbo setup found in the Buick Grand Nationals and T-Types. I am an avid fan of the 2.3T motor found in the TurboCoupes and SVO's (previous owner of an 85 Mustang SVO), but the engine in your TTA is a much better platform for a heavy Camaro/Bird. The term 'There is no replacement for displacement' still applies to forced induction setups. I recommend you check out the Grand National boards and see what kind of power those guys are getting with certain mods (reading tech or combo articles). There are also a bunch of TTA guys here on the boards, so maybe try a search here too. The 3.8T kicks butt!!

I agree with all said.
The only way I would consider swapping a 4 banger turbo into an F-body is if I had a gutted stripped out original Iron Duke'd early Camaro, and I had a built Mitsu 2.4 (4G64) with a turbo lying around, then I might try to slap it in. It would be unique.
I just wouldn't feasibly do it otherwise. Nothings cooler to me than a fully built twin turbo'd SBC, and that would be an easier swap into said car.

warning long story

yes I knot the TTA will rip

was just thinking about the 4 banger swap for something better on fuel with adjustable HP and some ***** ,I drive 23mi 1 way to work

my story on turbo Buicks

1999 I got webtv just to search about cars-found an 87 gn for sale $3,000

played with it for 1-1/2 yrs and didn't like the handling or braking-remember I had the 84 firebird for several yrs

so I'm on the turbo buick BB's and ask if anyone swapped the 3.8 (LC2) into a 3rd gen f-bod--lots of links sent to me about the TTA

well that was it I pulled the drivetrain out of the GN and got very lucky selling the body for $2,000

found TTA headers and engine mounts on buick boards

bought an 89 350 powered GTA
then ran out of money

then found a 92 talon awd turbo for $200 that needed the engine rebuilt

well that set me back about2 yrs because the rebuild on the talon went way over budget (still drive the talon every day)

so while the talon was being rebuilt the GTA was my daily driver Boom wrecked it in the rain-totalled

a few yrs go by and I'm searching for a 2nd gen or 2rd gen to swap the LC2 into

nov 2003 the guy who rebuilt my talon (owns Norht east turbo shop) says he is selling his TTA

now get this---for $5,000 I got a 70,000mi TTA with over $2,000 in brakes and suspension upgrades

and he is doing all the labor for 0 to rebuild the 87 gn engine and install into the TTA

now I'm just waiting for him to get it done

also bought from him race ported heads, roller cam package and a bunch of other goodies

with those heads and cam he was running mid 10's with this TTA

my wife doesn't understand why I'm going crazy--she says its only a trans am--you had 4 or 5 over the yrs

I tell her just wait till we go for a ride you'll be pissing your pants

sorry for the long post
