Salvage yard 305 block

I'm going to call a few salvage yards to look for a 305 block to rebuild. After reading the boards for a few weeks, I see that you can fine tune a 305. My question is, what should i look for when i purchase the block..

A 4" bore one.

It makes no economic sense to buy a 305 block to rebuild, unless you're racing in a class that requires it. And even then it usually makes more sense to just put a good junkyard short block in and run it until it blows up and then get another.

RB83L69 is right but if you absolutely want to get a salvage 305 block then you will want to have the block magna fluxed to check for cracks or sonic tested to see if it is in good enough condition to warrant a rebuild instead of just waisting money...but displacement is the cheapest way to make horse power so it is entirely up to you as to how many cubes you go for. Good luck.

Here is what you do. Go to a reputable yard and purchase a used 305 shortblock, take it to the machine shop, and have everything checked. Probably need som cylinder work, get the thing done. Get some good heads and everything else that you need, and put it all together. Then when you are done, you will realize that you spent the same amount of money you would have with a 350 and have less power. just get a 350.
