Cam Help-Please read this

I am in the process of putting a roller cam out of a 89 305 into a 57 283. Lets just things are not going very well at all. Old cam is out. New to the 283 cam is in. This is where all the trouble is at. I have the roller lifters, retainers, push rods and roller rockers. All that I have done to this point is install new cam and roller lifters, set in one push rod and set on the rocker with the pivot. I have tried this with both of the different size push rods, one from the roller 305 and what I had in the 283. The pushrods that I had in the 283 seem to "line up" better. The other major problem is how to keep the retainers on the lifters. They do not clear the block. i see 2 options, 1. grind the keepers to fit, 2. grind the block to allow the keepers to fit. Any ideas or help on this one?????????

with a non-roller block you need to buy retrofit roller lifters... they're taller.

You need to retrofit the block to have it accept a roller cam. By the way, why in the hell would you be using a cam from a 305 TBI in that motor. That cam almost resembles the smoothness of a broom stick if you catch my drift.

It won't work without a WHOLE BUNCH of fooling around.

Get the original design roller system that all the rest of us have been using all these years, and your problems will be at an end.

You can even get a decent cam instead of any of the stupid lame stock profiles they used in 89 305s.

All I was trying to do was put in a roller cam that I already had. Good thought very, very bad idea!! I ordered a computer compatable cam that should get me where I want to be. Although more power is always an ongoing battle that will never be won. Thanks for the input!!!
