BBC prices?????

Hey guys some of you may know im probably gettin a big block. well today i took alook at the motor (me and my friend) and the only thin wrong with it is that it needs new pistons and rings.

the kid bought the motor for $4400 from a "engine builder" and he got ripped on this motor. the guy did such a crappy job to as far as painting everything chevy orange, put used pistons and rings in the motor. the only good thing is that it has ported heads and the clyender walls still have the X marks on it from when it got honed.

right now me and my friend are at a stand still as far as price. how much do you guys think this motor is worth? it was suposed to have about 600hp but basiclly only has like about 400hp at the max. the motor is already bored .030 over i think, has a weiand single plane intake and the ported bbc heads. its also a 2 bolt main block.

can ya guys give me a hand here. im clueless to as far as how much to pay. after im done with it ill probably be just using the block and intake. but thats plans after the price is all said and done. thanx guys.

500 to 1000 would be my limit. i'd figure on it needing rebuilt and all new parts. last BBC i bought cost me 400 and i spent another 4000 on it.

Yea sounds pretty much like a core more than a runner, If the pistons are forged, it may have been alright to reuse them, but it`s for sale so I`m sure something wasn`t right with it. good core blocks with a few extras go for 500 and more all the time, just keep thinking to yourself that everything that was done to it will have to be redone the correct way.

I just hope my friend goes for that price. becuz i was thinkin about it and yeah everything ahas to be pulled and rebuilt correctly and everything will more then likly be brand new and upgraded at the same time. im lookin to drop about 4-5k into this motor.

the motor is fine besides the bad pistons and rings. like when he had it in his monty it was running fine, good oil pressure, running cool, the only bad thing was it started to smoke so he pulled it and dropped a bigger better motor which is now pulled again and has to be rebuilt.

thanx guys i just hope this isnt a big kick in the ***** to the kid. i think ill offer like 500-700 at the most and see if he says yeah.

on a side note greezemonkey was it a pita to install the Profab k member in the car? like did you get one made just for the bbc or does it not matter?

I just picked up a 427 for 750 bucks. All the machine work has been done, new bearings, gaskets and rings came with it also. Pretty much ready to go back together but I have to get bolts, oil pan, oil pump, pushrods and an intake. The car it was in before ran 11.20's but now has a different cam. Here's a pic of it, the intake, carb and scoop didn't come with it.

Are you planning on putting that in your Z? is it too old for emmission laws? if it`s going to be another third gen with a big block then :yourock: and if you need any there are a few of us that have done that swap. You do know that a 427 and 454 have the same bore size and rod length, crank and pistons are fairly easy to find for the extra cubes and torque if you want

I'm really not sure if it's going in my car or what at the moment. I do want to but then again, I don't hehe. Really want to get a Nova or a 67-68 Camaro to stick it in then I can turn my car into something that'll like the corners better. Humm emissions, we wont talk about that The only things I'm wondering about if I do swap it in my car is, motor mounts, oil pan and power steering pump. (Yes I want to keep my power steering) What will I have to do to make those things work.

Motor mounts are simple....drop the new engine right on`em they are the same and in the right location.

Oil pan...stock will work for a mild build up but if you plan on any rpm`s get the moroso 7 Qt ...not a kick out one if your going to run the hooker swap headers..they`ll run into the sump

Power steering is probably one of the bigger hurrdles I had, I used a bracket and pump from an 86 S-10 with a 2.5 L4 it fit up to the engine with little struggle, but took a while to find a pump that fit with little hassle. here some pictures of the swap at my site http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/487725/4

Well good news guys im goin to pick the motor up this week at some point. and he's letting me buy it as is for $750. i got some numbers off the heads and cant find a place to decode them. he said there pretty damn good plus the porting workdone to them they flow nicely.

he just hates how bad he got screwed on this motor.

if anyone can take a look if you know a place to find decode the head numbers heres the number 336781 is off the head and 3999289 is off the block.

Info from the mortec site

3999289....454.......72-79...2 or 4 bolt, some "CE" replacement blocks had four bolt main caps

336781.....73-85...oval...OPEN...454, 118cc chamber, 256/114cc ports

greezemonkey, thanks for the info. I'll probably be spinning this thing to 7500 rpm so the bigger pan is in order One of the guys who had it before me was spinning it up to 8500 and nothing came apart
