Opinions Wanted!!!!!
Okay i currently own an 89 firebird v6 2.8 auto. im goin to school startin in sept for automotive mechanics. i am taking my bird with meas my project car and it wont leave the school garage bay till im done school. i plan on doing an engine swap to a v8 and also to a 5spd. now the question i have is where do i start. i mean im pretty knwledgeable but want opinions and personal experiences. okay firts things first what engine to go for? i see alot about lt1's and ls1's ,and tpi's and crate. i was wondering which route to take. im lookin for something affordable to work with. also once i figure out which engine i want to swap where do i look for one at? also how hard is a auto to manual conversion? just want opinoins from people on the boards. all and any opinions are good for me. thanks alot

The best place to start is with a complete donor car that has the engine you want.
A resonable alternative is with a complete donor car that has the type of engine you want so you get all the stuff needed to get the engine in the car, but you actually use a different engine that you're building while the swap gets under way.
There's a tech article on the board home about swapping from auto to manual. Getting a manual donor car is a smart way to go about that.

Read these two threads to help you understand the Lt1/L98/Ls1 swap.
