Questions about installing hydromatic 350/400 trans
Hello all. I'm getting into my latest project, a 1986 carbed 350 w/400 hydro trans into a 1985 Firebird 2.8
I cannot find any info on how to find the correct trans crossmember for it, or on how the torque arm hooks back up .
Looked through the FAQ's and didnt see anything. Any idea where I need to go for this stuff ?
I looked at Spohn , but didnt see anything.
Also, was the 3 speed 350 Hydromatic ever offered in the 82-92 bodies ? I'm finding no info that it ever was. Plus I'm guessing the 350/400 is alot different dimensionwise the the 200 was ?
Thanks for your time & efforts

you need after market torque arm or to fab up a bracket. you can buy brackets for the th350. not sure if crossmember will bolt in or not, might need an adapter from the b&m th350 kit to make it work.
Do yourself a favor, and keep it simple
Here is the kit for a th350:

Here is the Kit for a 400:
http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...y_Code=Teckpak
This allows you to install a 700r4 output shaft into a th350 or th400 trans. It comes with the spacer so you can mount your 700r4 tailshaft onto the trans. Also comes with dipstick tube detent cable/kickdown switch, and all necessary hardware.
This allows you to keep your stock driveshaft, speedo equipment, crossmember, etc. It makes the install a direct bolt in, no problems.

These would be my preference:
TH400 - http://www.spohn.net/product.cfm?productid=1301
TH350 - http://www.spohn.net/product.cfm?productid=1303
Because they solve two problem: The crossmember itself, and getting the torque arm mount off of the transmision (and the torque arm stress off of the transmission mount).
You'd still have to address driveshaft length - minor.

Yeah, that will work, but the cost factor is a lot greater. On top of the cost of the torque arm, you have the driveshaft, shipping, etc. However, for performance reasons, that torque arm is much better than using the stock one. Still, though, I like the tek paks, everythings all addressed in one kit, nothing else you need, and its only 160 bucks.

Is the spacer & adapter hard to install in the 400 tail shaft ?
This is looking to be more work then I wanna be bothered with, getting this 400 in here.
I hate to leave the 700 R4 in it though, cuz these things seem to detonate as soon as the engine horsepower output reaches 250 or so. The car & driveline only has 100,000 actual original miles on it.

It isnt a difficult task. I will be honest and tell you that I didnt install the output shaft in mine, but that isnt hard to do. The rest I did. It honestly made the job a direct bolt in, no hassle with anything. I have seen all kinds of threads about the brackets being a royal pain in the ***. I agree with 5-7 though, if you arent going to go the route that I did, I would either look into some lift bars or the aftermarket torque arm. Then all you really have to deal with is the driveshaft, crossmember.
