Considering this engine...your thoughts please..

Engine 12513151 Caprice / Fleetwood 350 from SDPC

9.6:1 Comp.
Weak cam but they are willing to upgrade it to a 95'-97' LT1 cam which they think will really wake it up...cost goes from 1,585 to around 2,000 US for this option. Any thoughts on this?

From the website: "This engine is also commonly used in 1987-92 Camaro and Firebird cars with TPI as a replacement for the original 305 or 350 engine"

This will be installed on my TPI setup with a 5spd and 3.45's out back. I'm looking for an honest 300hp at the wheels, and really strong mid range. I don't think the LT1 cam alone will get me there.

The heads will really hold it back, even with a better cam. If you can find a buyer for them and put some L98 or aftermarket heads on it, you'll have a much better package.

No way you will be close to even 300 at the fly with that setup. If you want 300 at the tires with TPI its going to cost some $$$.

Do you have to pass smog?

I think both Steve and I want the same thing...300 or so at the wheels w/ a SBC and TPI (for ease of plug/play). I'm still considering the SDPC Vortec 350 TPI....360 at the fly...so, seems like it'll be a killer street machine...

Not sure about Steve, but I have to pass emissions only on the sniffer...so, if any combo's would work, it'd be appreciated. How about stock 350 L98 w/ Banks Twin Turbo? 6psi renders it at like 400 or so horse on pump gas and stock internals (From what I read)...

Don't mean to hijack the thread Steve, but I do believe we have the same expectations...

If you have to pass smog, swap in an LT1, stay as far away from TPI as possible. The junkyard next to me just sold an LT1/T56 for $2200 running. Take an LT1, swap a decent camshaft into it, stick some headers on it and you should meet your goal, and have a platform for modding later down the road that isnt already at its limit.
