You cannot put an exact price on it. There are to many factors to determin how much it will cost. If you buy the parts new it will cost you a fortune. If you find them in a yard it will most likely be cheaper. You need a lot of stuff if all you got was the longblock. Expect an easy couple grand on top of that to remotely get it close.

if it does not have the intake and all, you could save some money and go carb

an intake you can get from the guys over at LS1tech.com for cheap.. 100$ or less..

that edelbrock carb thing is waaaaaaaay over priced.. not to mention a waste of an LS1

actually, i am extremely interested in running a carb on an ls1 and it includes way more than just an intake manifold. it includes all the necessaries to have a stand alone ignition sytem on an ls1 as well.

advantages:
weight savings from the all aluminum block
nearly indestructable 6 bolt main caps
blocks can be resleaved if you screw them up(not super cheap but still)
ease of tuning with a holley sitting on top
no expensive computers that can be confusing
cool factor of having a cabed ls1

disadvantages:
poor mileage (like that of any other carbed motor) compared to injection
you still have to pay for all of that conversion stuff ie motor mounts, headers, etc.
no fuel pump bosses, must run an electric (only a disadvantage to some)
that's about all i can think of, advantages far outweigh th disadvantages to me...

I found an LS1 long block for 1000k a week ago here (Quebec)
Thats pretty cheap .. tho to get all the other parts needed.. that will just blow away your budget ..

Technology wise, like mw66nova listed, you win, but the less you get at first, the more you pay later.

It's going to depend on what you really want to get out of it.

Are you looking to just get stock LS1 power? Or are you going to mod it? Heads and cam packages alone get expensive real quick. You can spend an easy grand on bolt-ons as well.

You really have to look at the rest of your car though. You are going to want the bigger LS1 f-body brakes all the way around, and an entire new rear end wouldn't hurt. The LS1 is lighter than the older SBC engines, so your suspension geometry is going to need to be adjusted.

Your either going to have to bite the bullet and buy a custom wiring harness, or be capable enough with wiring yourself to get the job done. You'll also need to get new motor mounts and transmission crossmember. Exhaust is going to be another concern. Do you have to deal with emissions? If so, that just added a lot of headaches if you're going to drive it on the streets. (It also makes the Carb'd LS1 option not just a poor performance choice, but an illegal choice - Federal emissions laws prohibit carbing an LS1 for street use).

These are just some of the things necessary. I don't believe you can use many Corvette parts. There are some major differences between Vette and Fbody LS1 engines.

Check out the various threads on LS1 swaps. There is a ton of info out there on them. Average swap is about $8 grand I believe, with only 1/3 of that being the actual LS1 engine. Even if you have the entire drivetrain and want to leave it stock, you're going to spend several thousand on upgrading the rest of your car to make it work properly.

And that last post was correct - the less you do now, the more it will cost you later. Most cost effective to bite the bullet and pretty much do everything you want all at once.
