427 SBC crate motor

Alright, here's the idea. When I get back from Iraq next year I'm gonna have a lot of money in the bank, so I'm finally gonna replace the old camaro. The plan would be to drop in a 427 SBC MOTOWN crate engine from world (part# WRL-101006 from Summit). What's everyones opinion on this idea what would be required to do the swap. Also I figured an automatic would be a little more practical with this setup, what would be a good choice of transmission. I figured a 9" rear-end with 3.73 gears. Right now this is just a dream but soon enough it will be totally possible and most likely will happen, so I just wanted to run the idea by you guys and see what you thought.

also, what about exhaust, would this engine (505 w/ cast iron heads, or 530 w/ aluminum) neccessitate dual exhaust, or would a 3.5" or 4" exhaust be sufficient.

it would be street/strip. pretty much it would see the street only on the weekends.

A built TH350 or TH400 would be in order.

If you really wanted to go nuts, a 4L80E.

I think I'd do duals.

Yeah, I prolly will go dual. Still keep my mind open about a large diameter single exhaust. Prolly go with the th-400 on the tranny.

http://www.shafiroff.com/434_595_engine.asp
thay are all around the same price range, but im not really sure that i want to spend almost 10Gs on an engine.

Re: 427 SBC crate motor

I know this is an old thread, but it yielded good info and I have one or two questions that I wasn't able to find answers to doing a search.

I've been planning out a restore/mod of my 89 RS for sometime now (waiting to graduate college to get started). It has a 700R4, LO3 and a 10-bolt for a powertrain, but I knew fairly early on that I would want more, but wasn't quite sure what. I had been planning on a 334tbi, Hughes HD 700R4, and rebuilt 10-bolt. But recently I decided to plan for a Richmond 6-Speed and a Moser 12-bolt for better AX'ing and more aftermarket parts availability, but I couldn't feel quite justified in having that kind of drivetrain on a 400FWHP 334 engine. So I began looking at 350 based engines, but they still didn't seem to have the power out of the box like an LSx or BBC crate motor.

It wasn't till today that I found out that there was a Gen I 427 SBC on the market (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WR...6/?image=large). I'm now strongly considering the World Motown 427 SBC and dressing it out. That would allow me to keep the same drivetrain (just have to revise the flywheel choice) and get gobs of power out of the box, while having the full aftermarket options of the 350's.

The only questions I couldn't find answers to are:

1) Since its a carb, what kind of fuel pump is best suited for it? I've heard of using a electric pump instead of a mechanical pump, but not seen alot on how to do what or what pump size to use either way.

2) If I did go to fuel injection, I would most likely use TBI. I know I'd need a 454 TBI unit, but would that be enough for the 530hp this motor puts out stock? If not, what other fuel injection options do I have?

A TBI setup will never keep up with that motor.

Re: 427 SBC crate motor

The factory TBI on my 454SS can supply enough fuel for low to mid 300 HP. A port injection system can flow a lot more fuel to supply enough for more HP. TBI is really restricted for how much fuel can be forced through 2 injectors.

In response to the older part of the thread, 2 smaller exhaust pipes can flow more than one large one. Dual 2-3/4" flows slightly less than a single 4" and may be easier to fit under the car.

I would've used a CFM tech 454 TBI and injectors, but you're right, it wouldn't have been enough.

What kind of port injection would you recommend for a 427? I've seen several kits from Edelbrock, Holley, and FAST than convert a 4150 carb to what looks like 4bbl TBI. I've also seen HSR kits as well. Which do you think would be better?

Re: 427 SBC crate motor

I don't do EFI other than what came from the factory in my truck. My car uses a mechanical injection system.

I run a dual toilet system like this http://www.ronsfuel.com/flying_toilet.cfm

Ron's also has EFI throttle bodies with the 4150 pattern.

Another option is to use a low profile dual carb intake and run dual TBI's on adapters. With filters on them, it will look like a dual 4bbl system. Something like this.

Last I read on here, dual TBI was still stuck at the couldn't-get-one-ECU-to-run-both-TBI's stage. Has there been a breakthrough in that area in the last few months?

The HSR kit I was looking at was this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-91506211/

It has everything needed to setup EFI on an engine. All one would need is a laptop and time to tune it.
