79 vette 350 vs 305(lb9)

ok guys i know ive posted alot about swapping this engine in and the reason is because ive heard these engines are dogs, but i can get the complete engine for 100 bucks. but here are some of my questions that need answerd before i drop it in. im also planning on swaping over the TPI unit

1. will it produce more power than my 305 (lb9)?
2. will my 700r4 tranny need rebuilt to take the power?
3. will i have any fittment issues?
4. will i pass EGR tests?

sorry if i have been a pain but i really dont want to spend my time dropping in an engine that wont be worth it.

1. No. Not as it sits. It may have slightly more torque, won't be by much; it will have considerably less HP.
2. Based on #1, no.
3. No.
4. Yes; assuming that all the TPI stuff is properly re-installed.

A little more than the amount it would take if you started out with no 350 at all.

Basically, the only thing you can re-use out of that 180 HP smogger turd, is the block; and if you keep the stock TPI on it, the crank and rods, since the TPI will protect them from ever seeing any significant stress. You'll need new pistons, cam, heads, and all the soft parts; plus the typical rebuild machine work.

You can go to the junkyrad and buy a blown-up grocery-cart motor out of a 75 Impala with a 2-barrel carb; and not have to pay the "from a Vette" extra cover charge. Probably cost you $50 or so. It'll have the exact same parts in it as the other, as far as what you can use; and you'll have to throw away all the exact same other parts.

Let some starry-eyed "Vette" dipwad come and pay too much for that other thing just because it was wrapped in fiberglass instead of sheet metal for part of its life. Those people aren't smart enough to realize that no mystical spiritual properties wafted up out of the fiberglass and imbued the block with their magic. We know better than that around here. (well some of use do anyway)
