My 92 RS has a 6 speed already and I also have a 454 I want to install later this summer. My question is. I have a new flywheel for the 454 but it is bigger that the 6spd flywheel. Do I get a different flywheel or do they make a pressure plate that works with the 6 speed and 454? Thanks

You will need a different flywheel. THe only one I know of off the top of my head is from Centerforce; but it's possible that there are others.

There is no need to change the pressure plate, if you get the right flywheel.

So would you ask for a centerforce flywheel for a 454 6speed combo like from summit or jegs? Or does that flywheel have another aplication?

It lists for the SB 400. You can look it up on Centerforce's site. Get a good grip on the arms of your chair before you look up the price.

Just curious if you have done the swap already do you have the part number sitting around? I'm holding on so you can give me the price. I new stock 454 flywheel I just picked up was about $43. Is it higher than that :-). If the flywheel has a stock application I may be able to pick it up from the parts store and save a few bucks.

There is no stock app for it, that's why it's so expensive. I checked into it alittle bit when I first got my sb400 and it was around $375 it could be different now.

Hey thanks for the help. 375 vs 43 is a little bit of a difference :-)

A smallblock 400 and a 454 take different flywheels. They are both externally balanced; however, the counterweights are different.

Yep; but if you have the one, you're about ¾ of the way from a 350 or 396 flywheel, to a 400 or 454 one.

Just a thought , could you use one of those balance plates that bolt on with the flywheel? I remember when I did a 406 for my 85Z and I ended up using a balance plate for the 400 with the 305 flywheel, it worked out fine, no vibs and the plare was only 22.00 (I did it this way because no one made a 12 3/4 400 flexplate) I know I have seen them for 454`s so it may be a cheap way out if you could find a neutral balance wheel that has the right diameter for the T56 that will bolt up to the 454

83-85 T-5 flywheel, have it custom "unbalanced" to match the 454.

Have lots of T-5s on hand. I doubt a T-5 would make it all the way to the grocery store before getting shredded.

Just because something can be done, doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it.

The 454 is externally balanced. The flywheel I have is for a 454 but since the flywheel is bigger than the LT1's the pressure plate won't reach the holes to bolt up. I'm wondering if I can't re-drill the 454 flywheel to accomadate the LT1 clutch set up. I mean really all 's that would be important is for it to be centered. the flywheel will balance the motor.

I don't think so.

AFAIK the 14" flywheel won't fit inside the LT1 bell housing.
