speartech harness
speartech harness
anyone running one of these for their ls1 swap.
i was looking into one for mine as the $450 for the rework sounded reasonable with limited time. after i added an extra $350 for a new one since i needed an extension to put the computer in the factory location i also needed another $300 for them to adapt the new custom speartech harness to part of my 92 dash harness so that my factory guages would work.
what looked to be a simple $450 rewiring eneded up right around $1,100 to use the motor with the factory guages and have the computer in the stock location.
just wondering what those of you who have used speartech ended up choosing for a route? as i thought you send in your factory ls1 harness, spend the $450 to rework it and call it a day but that isn't the case.. granted the $300 is because i don't want the computer under the hood but $1,100 and i have to give them several parts of my harness seems a bit odd as the wiring is starting to cost me more then the complete drivetrain itself.

i would really like some info on this as well. i havent looked specifically for info about the harness, but i havent found much about it. i wonder if it makes it a pretty much "bolt-in" wiring job or if there is still custom work that has to be done? and how easily would this connect to something like autometer gauges?
anything aftermarket isn't plug in play. when you spend $1,100 for a reworked ls1 harness it had better be plug n play.
what your looking for would be around $450 just to rework a few of the ends to adapt to our stock equipment and then you would have to personally find out how to tie in the autometer guages. another $300 and part of your factory thirdgen harness and it would work plug and play with factory guages or at least be labeled for aftermarket.
$300 more from them will get you their brand new custom ls1 harness which is extended. they will not extend factory ls1 harnesses.
that's speartech though, there are other options, cheaper options out there.. especially if you aren't going to use the factory guages.

I tried contacting Speartech and got no response. 1100 bucks for wiring is way too high priced for me. I'll go carbed before I spend that kind of dough on wiring. Their prices seem to be climbing rapidly now that their name is out there. Turn around time is months as of now too from what I have read on other boards. 1100 bucks plug and play? Damn well better look sweet as cherry pie for that kind of dough too.

If you get the factory harness with the engine, try LT1350 he modifies LT1 and LS1 harness if you don't want to attempt to wire the car yourself. His prices are very reasonable.

his stuff is very high quality and plug and pray...
but for a 3rdgen, where its almost a bolt in, i cant justify the cost.
do some searching under my name on ls1tech.com..... you'll find that while the PCM doesnt reach the "stock location" of being vertical under the dash, it still fits under the dash NEAR the stock location with the stock harness.

do you have to cut a makeshift hole in the firewall to fit that location? i don't care if i fit it in the fender well i just don't want the ecm anywhere in the engine bay you know.

cool Thanks Dude. I haven't had enough time yet to tackle the wiring so I am getting antsy. The car is in pieces blocking up my shop and I gotta get it done soon.

from what i read online:
hawks thirdgen sticks it in a existing hole.
from what i did:
i made a clean 2" hole with a holesaw, stuck the harness thru, put a grommet on it, and it looks factory. the harness wire bundle itself is roughly 1.800" so its just a "rubber band" looking grommet to make the edge look clean and seal it all.
i know what you mean about it being in the engine bay though.. i tried it everywhere.. it jsut doesnt work.. it needs to be underdash for that clean look.

well i ended up trying howell engineering here in michiganl $850 for a 60' pigtail setup, dual fans and a few other little trick things i added and it works great. direct plug in for all but the tach which is half of what it originally was. should be able to figure that out soon though. thanks for the suggestions.

). I got my harness reworked from speartech, and cut the hole in the firewall. I leave tomorrow for spain but i'll be back in a week, so just pm me if you want to hook up sometime.
