350 in my 89 RS - few ?s

i've got a friend who is a mechanic..hes needing extra money so he told me he'd put my 350 in for around 500 bucks. so I'm gonna do it. i got a few questions b4 i take it to him.

I know I’m going to have to do a custom chip when I get the 350 in. To be honest, I really don’t want to mess with all of that.. Would it be easier and less hassle to switch to a carb setup and get rid of the computer all together? What all would it take to go from TBI to Carb? New intake manifold, carb(duh), distributor..what else?

And another stupid question that I need an answer to... I had an engine fire a few months back (the 350 that’s goin in my RS) and it was carbed back then...the intake I had on it was aluminium… how can I tell if its done for? Any definite visible signs, or should I be thinking because it was aluminium and the engine was on fire for 15 minutes that’s its completely toast.

Thanks guys!!

There's a tech article linked on the thirdgen.org home page that discusses the EFI to carb swap. Fuel pressure regulation and torque converter lockup are the two main issues.

The manifold should probably be removed and inspected. Easier now than when the engine is back in the car and you have a problem.

If fuel mileage and overall ease of driviability isn't a concern than there is nothing wrong with going to carb. However, retaining TBI will allow your motor to be very fuel efficient and street friendly.

Fast cold start-ups, better fuel economy, better throttle responce (carbs can perform the same way when set-up properly), and better emissions.
