Use the short head bolts.
They're tough. Even the long ones shouldn't bend, but use the short ones just to lessen the possibility.

Engine Pull w/No Heads
kamaroirock,
Just pulled ours a week or two ago. Used the tranny mount bolt(s) and the Water Pump Mounting Hole(s) with good strength bolts. We actually ran the chain though two bolts for the pick-up and also bolted the slack ends into two additional holes for safety purposes. They might not have been the best places but without the heads we could grab the motor real low and didn't even need to remove the hood. Without the top end the motor is very light.
If you grab it by the head bolts on the mating surface make sure you do something to avoid having the chain damage the top of the block (if you intend to use it again).
Sincerely,
Kurt & Derek

I used the accessory/exhaust bolt holes on mine.. works just fine. We also did that with my cousin's FE (ford) engine, and it uses the same size bolts (9/16) and the damn thing weighs more than a BBC does, I'm sure.
