'92 305 TPI into '86
In the next few weeks, I'll be starting a big project (for me). I've aquired a wrecked '92 B4C wik a 305 TPI and all the goodies. I drive an '86 Z28 5-spd wik a (mild) carbed 350. The plan is to swap nearly everything from the 92 into the 86. When I say nearly everything I mean...
Complete motor + clutch, starter, alt., pwr steering etc.
Wiring harness and 'puter
WC T5 Trans
Radiator + Fans
Fast steering box
Fuel tank + lines
rear end (disc brakes + 3.42 from drum + 3.23)
front brakes, spindles, koni's, control arms
Brake lines and booster etc.
BY SEARCHING, it seams the easiest and cleanest way to do the motor swap is transfer all the 92 stuff over (harness, ecm)
I'll basically be keeping the body, wipers + wiper motor, dash and gauges, crossmembers, springs, from the '86.
I've already removed the a/c and emissions stuff from the '86 including swaping to a non-a/c heater box. I'll be doing the same to the 305 and buy the delete pulleys, and plug up the exhaust manifolds. Is it that simple? Anything else? Being street legal is not a concern.
"While you're at it"s
Replace fuel pump and filter
poly bushings and replace ball joints
Anything else?
Concerns
Will the clutch cable be the same?
Is the speedo cable same? I'll have to change out something to make it read the correct speed tho right?
Tach inputs?
86 Gauge cluster compatable wik 92 wiring harness?
Misc bolt holes?
Anything else?
Sorry for the length and questions. I just don't like surprises and want to be prepared to make changes.
Thanks

I think you'll find that:
- The clutch is hydraulic, not cable.
- The speedometer in the '92 is electronic, not cable.
- You'll need to do some of the under-dash harnesses.

ralley gauge swap of the 92 into the 86 should take care of the vss issues.
Did the 86 have vats yet? might want to pull the keylock cylinder, or just bypass.

D'oh, they both will be hydraulic... it's been a year since I replaced the clutch. Well, it looks like the gauge cluster has to be swapped as well. Isn't it true that the dash would need to be swapped or at least modified to fit the 91-92 cluster?
The 86 runs right now wikout a computer at all. The harness has been reduced to the essentials. Is there a way so that the computer and associated harness just runs the engine? Basically have 2 independant harnesses or is that just asking for trouble? I'm new to all this computer stuff and wiring isnt' exactly my favorite thing to do.
I'll be doing a little more research, but I'll probablly just bypass the VATS and keep the steering column, and make a few modifications to the harness at that connection if necessary (remove cruise and such).
I've got an 86 service manual, time to start looking for a 92.
As far as why go from a mild 350 to a stock 305 (down to the stock ex manifolds)..... Rules.
