Put on mech fuel pump...still no gas to carb!
I have an elec fuel pump in the tank. Does not work. Pulled the fuse, hooked back up my mech pump that I had on before I put the motor in the car, No fuel flowing. Put gas in carb, turned key car started then shut off...still no gas flowing. I did this about four or five times with the same result. I guess my question is, will the mech pump pull fuel through the elec pump in the tank? I am trying to avoid dropping the tank just to pull it out! Any ideas? How should I prime the pump or get fuel pumping? Thanks.

Thanks but NO thanks, I would rather drop the tank than to do a crappy job involving cutting a hole in the floor just to get to the fuel pump. May be easier but that don't make it right.

A couple dozen (+/-) revolutions of the camshaft will provide all the pull you need to get fuel to the pump.
I'm glad to read you decided not to Hack the trunk. In order to remove the pick-up assy. You would have to make an ENORMOUS hole in the car and sacrifice safety for a few hours of work. I just pulled the tank in my son's '82 a few weeks back and it was not that bad. The problem with the '82 is the one-piece filler neck. Unfortunately, for those of us with '82's '83's and '84's (I think on '84) we have a heck of a lot harder time than the later models where the filler neck can be removed. You'll probably have to remove the muffler to get the tank out.
#1 - Remove the suspension cross links (2).
#2 - Remove the three heat shields (1 large, 2-small)
#3 - Disconnect the lines (4) above the rear tire at the front of the tank and remove the gas cap.
#4 - Remove the muffler & exit exhaust (hopefully not welded)
#5 - Disconnect the electrical connection: Pink, Black w/Stripe, Brown (driver's rear tail lamp area on an '82 Z-28).
#6 - Support the tank (hopefully empty) and remove the staps
#7 - Pull down and out toward the pass rear tire.
#8 - Remove the Pick-up assy with a brass punch or non-sparking tool.
#9 - Remove the pump and replace it with a length of hose.
#10 - Label the ends of the pick-up assy. lines (where they will hook up to you vehicle's chassis lines) before you put it back in!
With the help of a friend could be done PROPERLY in an afternoon.
Sure wish you were closer to Atlanta.... I'd be there in a minute to help ya.
Sincerely,
Kurt

I think nit's funny when people say don't put in an access hole in the hatch to reach the fuel pump. drop the tank and do it right. GM dropped the ball on this as my 99 GP HAS this access panel in the trunk for jsut such access. IF done right, there shouldn't be any problems, and there are plenty of people/links to those who have done it & not killed themslves or the car.

How do you do something like this right? IMPO - YOU CANT!
In order to remove the pump/pick-up assy (without cutting the lines) one would have to cut an ENORMOUS HOLE in the trunk area in order to wiggle the pick-up assy out (the leads are over 24" long and the pick-up is 12"+). It can't be done with a 6" or even a 12" hole... The guy that owned our Z-28 before us cut a hole 6" x 12" and he STILL COULDN'T GET IT OUT without clipping the lines and splicing them back together with rubber hose. We couldn't install the new (non-butchered) pick-up assy in that enormous hole without dropping the tank.
Did GM make a mistake? SURE AS HECK DID! Should they have an access port with provisions to disconnect the lines near/at the hole? Absolutely! But they didn't...... IMPO -The ONLY way to do the job PROFESSIONALLY & SAFELY is to REMOVE THE TANK!
I know I wouldn't want to be rear ended in a Camaro with the trunk hole modification..... Anybody old enough here to remember the Ford PINTO?
Sincerely,
Kurt

Got it all lined up gents, dropped the tank, pulled the pump, installed mech pump up front, re-routed fuel lines...she is good to go no on fuel. Only thing left is the tv cable bracket which I just ordered from summit. Should be on the road in a matter of days now. Next comes paint, interior, sound system, etc... Thanks

Pulling the tank wasn't that bad was it?
