Latest 84 T/A Problem - Tranny Won't Shift
Hi all,
I recently swapped the 305 in my 84 Trans Am for a 350. Everything is bolted up, car runs great, but the car won't shift into gear. We reused the stock tranny. The linkage that bolts to the tranny is properly connected, as is the 4 prong electrical connection. When I shift gears, the shifter feels like it's working, but you can't feel the "clunk" as it goes into gear and the car won't move. Any ideas as to the problem?
Thanks,
Joe

Adding to my last message....
The car seems to be shifting into gear; for example, the car will only start when the car is in Park or Neutral, and if I shift it into Neutral I can push the car....but it won't move under its own power. Ideas?
Thanks,
Joe

I'd suspect you didn't get the torque converter properly engaged in the front pump when you put it back together. If that's the case, you've probably ruined the front pump.

I second that! You have to make sure the tque cvtr is pushed all the way back to engage the pump.

Make sure its full of transmission fluid. I once thought I had put enough in then added more and it worked. Those were the days when I learned about cars by screwing them up. Glad those days are gone!
