305 TPI to L98

Is this swap worth it? I'm quite curious. Is the 305 worth building or is a rebuilt L98 the way to go?

Welcome aboard.

What are your goals? Are you trying to "fix" something, or do you just want more?

Most of the time, rebuilding a 305 isn't cost effective for the results compared to rebuilding a 350. However, sometimes what the 305 needs isn't a rebuild.

So, we need to know more of the background.

Sorry for not clarifying. I meant working up the 305, the motor is in great shape. I dont even have the car yet, its a 91 TA. I'm 99% sure the car is going to be mine by the end of the week. I got some cash to dump, and I was wondering which route I should take.

And you're sure it's TPI and not TBI.

First I'd do exhaust. Headers, 3" cat on back. Then PROM tuning.

Those are things you would have to do to get more out of the L98, anyway. Might as well start there. The 350 can come later.

After subframe connectors, poly bushings, brake upgrades, rear end gears and other upgrades, higher stall converter...

How much $$ do you have to spend? If the 305 is in good running shape i say keep it for now and spend the money on all the external upgrades, bc externally theyr exactly the same.

Headers back exhaust open up the intake side susp gears etc and when the block goes get that 350 b/c its gonna cost roughly the same to rebuild that 305 as a 350 so might as well do it right...

OTOH if youve got the $ and knowhow to do the swap get an LTx or LSx, but if an L98 comes your way for cheap its definetely worth looking into

I definetly don't have the money for an LT1 or an LS1... since it'll be my first F-body, I'll drive it for a while, see what I want to do with it.
