New project--Help

I jsut bought a new project car. 92 TBI camaro.

The wiring is all hacked up....

I basically need some assistance on what I can/should remove when doing a carbed engine swap. The computer wiring harness is all out but some of the wires for it go to the driverside relays and some connect into wires that start on the driverside harness.

I will not be using AC and I want my instrument cluster to function.

Also, can I remove the factory alarm and wiring, I dont care for it?

Here is a pic of what I have, and all info is welcomed. I need to know how to start getting the wiring ready for an engine.

Thanks.

Basically every wire you need to run a carb'd engine is there on the dirvers side harness. DO a few searches, youll find what wire goes where, its pretty straight forward.

I really want to know about VSS, because someone mentioned that my speedo wont work if I dont have the ecm hooked up for the vss. Its a 92 with electrical speedo.

As far as the driverside wires, should i trace them back to the fuse box to identify where they are supposed to go?

Driver's Side Harness

tommy z-28,

There are TWO (2) distinct wiring strands that originate on the driver's side firewall. They are basically clipped together and a single bolt (1/4"??) holds them into the firewall connector. You need both of them for sure!.

The LARGER strand will contain connections for the following: WIPERS, OIL PRESSURE, WATER TEMP, DIZZY & TACH?, ALTERNATOR, & STARTER. It also supplies power to the A/C and although you apparently ditched the A/C you might want heat and defrost?

The SMALLER strand provides power to ALL of the front lighting and the brake warning lamp (connects to the brake fluid distribution block). Nothing else I know of.....

Regardless of what you decide to do to the intake you will need both of those strands to be basically 100% complete. Since your ditching the ECM you'll need an Old Vac Advance Dizzy (or some aftermarket item) The LARGER strand, in stock form, can provide the power for the old-style Dizzy.

The relays you mentioned on the Driver's firewall can be for a number of items depending on your specific vehicle. They could be..... Relay for Fuel Pump, Relay for A/C, Relay for Electric Cooling Fans...maybe something else, I can't quite remember but there is something else I'm forgetting right now.

As far as the Speedo I personally haven't a clue how to make that work. Maybe you could change over to a mechanical from another year? That might be the cheapest and easiest move.

Judging by the looks of that mess of wires you have there you might be better off heading to the J.Yard and grabbing another harness from the driver's side. At the same time you could label all the connections and that could make your life TONS easier!

Hope something in there helped.
Kurt

P.S. You're also going to need to get an aftermarket kit to allow the Tranny to lock-up into OD since you've decided to ditch the ECM.

Would tranny lock up be an issue if I went to a th350(no OD with it)? THis is my plan and I heard its best to get a non-lockup unit for performance. Can I still drive 5000mi street a year witha non lockup unit?

tommy z-28,

You will create a few more issues for yourself if you change over to the TH-350. Your Torque Arm will no longer have the proper mounting bracket holes. You may also have length issues that will require modification of the rear tranny supporting bracket(s). Someone with more knowledge will have to help with that information.

I was told that driving without the lock-up was not a hazard to the life of the tranny but was a significant drain on fuel economy. That was just one of the reasons I chose to retain the ECM.

I had a TH-350 in my '78 T/A and to the best of my knowledge/memory the only electrical connection was for the reverse lamps. I guess that guarantees you will need to changeover to a Mechanical Speedo (another problem you mentioned in the previous posts).

Several folks on this board seem to think that the TH350 is a better choice than the TH700 for performance.... Others disagree.... I personally do not have enough knowledge of the internal workings of the Automatic Tranny to give first hand knowledge or good advice on which is better for you.

Sincerely,
Kurt

I just installed a 350 carb in my 1992 305 TBI.

I don't think there is an issue with speedo - I disconnected my ECM and my speedo works fine.

The rest I wouldn't know - I started with a running car, so no wiring nightmare for me. I know you'll need to get CTS wire for the guage to work, and the OPSU wires so the fuel pump gets power and the oil guage works. Other than those, I have no other wires actually running to the motor itself - the rest are fans, A/C, lights, etc.

im in the same boat soon
i pulled an l69 to swap for my dead lg4
its been so long since i pulled out the lg4 that i dont remember where anything goes

and im thing to be minimalistic
if its not needed for the engine to run/start/stop
or a headlight or brake lamp its not getting hooked back up

i also removed all ac garbage and heatercore
i pulled the dash and removed all ductwork
prolly pulled 50lbs off the car just with that

im doing more things to try to lighten it up also but to many to list

im going to try to hook the l69 up with just with what it has to have
everything else is not going on it
vaccum system to brakes is about all i plan on for vaccum
took off all emissions garbage

and going to try to run the qjet without all this **** is going to be a pain in the *** im sure

i dont know what i get it bolted up is when im going to start asking all my questions lol
im far from a mechanic, so this is going to be a long process

good luck with yours man
