Swaped a 350 TPI into a 305 TPI car!! Now it wont hold timing ETC...
Ok- i have got my engine in and all the tpi stuff hooked up,
itsa 358ci sb with vortec heads, 9.75:1 compression ratio, forged flat top pistons, forged rods, balacned rotating assembly, high flow baseplate& runners, Ported & polished plenum, stock TP 24# LT1 injectors. Shortty hedders 1 3/4 primarys 2.5" collectors.
ok- I have not had my Eprom reprogramed yet, so i was wondering if that might be ther problem right off the bat, but here is what happens.
The engine has to crank and crank and crank, probably added up to 3 mins of cranking. ( not strait cranking of course but about 7second intervals) and rotating the distributor
Finally she will start up but run like crap and then when it warms up it will idle on its own but at about 1300 rpm's and surge to 1500 rpms. Then it will settle down and idle at about 750 but then she will surge and die again.
Whats wrong there?
Also- My fan only turns on when engine starts, and shuts off when the engine dies, Isnt it supposed to turn on when it reaches a certain temperature, and the computer shut it off at a certain temperature? It would turn on around 180 or 185 before..
Thanks for all your help!!
Please move this post to the proper board if this is not it.
Thanks.

Almost sounds like your distributor is bad. Could check this thread and give it a look. Other than that someone else will surely know more.

Also, what type of metal is on your dist gear of your cam. If you used a cam with the wrong dist gear drive you could have messed up the gear on the dist. Then it will not hold timing.

The gear on the distributor is fine, not knawled up or anything.

is fuel getting there? it's either electric or fuel......fuel is a big deal esp. on efi engines....checking electric is easy: does the plug spark? fuel: check filter, pump, then fuel pressure......got to be one of those items.

Your car is so far from it's orginal program I am not sure we are going to be able to pin this down. Your trying to run this car on a chip for a 1986 305tpi with 19lb injectors and your car could not be further from that orginal combination. 358 with Vortec heads, cam and 24 lb injectors. Have Fast chips set you up a chip on this car and see where you are at then.
I surpised the car even starts with that chip.

On a similar note, my dad put a 365 LT4 cammed vortec in place of his stock 350 vortec in his suburban, ran just fine on the stock 1997 GM electronics to no suprise. Mass air is just that, mass air. It measures air going into the engine via a sensor mounted in the incoming air stream and then injects the appropriate fuel.
I have seen a 360 chrysler motorhome run by a stock 5.0 ford MAF setup.
