Question on hood clearance

Hello, I've never really posted here before but you guys have a great site. I am finally beginning the build up of my 86 camaro. 350 with forged pistons 10-1 vortec heads moderate cam, performer rpm air gap hood etc and I was wondering if any of you guys had any experiance with whether or not the rpm intake will fit under a stock Iroc hood. I have no problem swapping hoods but I won't if I don't have to. (not right away anyway)

You should be fine. Others have done it and I've fit a 3" air cleaner on top of both an RPM Air Gap and a Victor Jr in my Trans Am.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Did you have the 3" on a drop base and if so how much?

The hood problem seems, in some ways, to be hit or miss. (After I'd swapped in my 350 HO Deluxe, I found that despite what people had advised, the hood wouldn't close with the 15x3 cleaner that the engine was equipped with.) You may have to try different combos of diameter and drop.

I have a weiand highrise intake on my engine with a 3" air cleaner and it clears my stock hood fine. My 3" cleaner has a 1 1/2 in drop on the base.

Mystery solved. Got the engine assembled and in yesterday, despite two runs to the hardware store for bolts (I am going to catch the guy that comes and steals bolts when my back is turned). With and edelbrock rpm air gap intake, holley carb, holley 14x3 w/ 11/2" drop it fits. You would never guess by looking at it, unless you notice that the master cylinder is higher.

a super victor or a victor jr? a super victor would probably be hard to fit without a filter...though a victor jr. can be done with a megadrop drop base, though i can't remember what the p/n is...you can get it through GM, i want to say it's a 2" drop base.

A #2975 Vic. Jr is actually 3/4 shorter than a performer RPM or RPM Air-Gap. I have had both on my car with the stock hood.

Check the Edelbrock site to see the height difference between a performer RPM and the Super Victor. You'll need the difference in cowl.

I think Blackroc86 has a super victor vortec under a token 3" hood (really 2.25" if I recall correctly) and a 3" are cleaner. If you PM him he'll be able to tell you better though.

I had a Super Victor vortec intake on my Iroc with a 3.5" Token cowl hood which is only maybe a 2.5" cowl in reality. I ran a K & N 2" high element wtih the K & N flow through top and a 2" drop down base.

I also had a nitrous plate under the carb.
