vats problems

i have a 89 firebird I did an engine swap on. it had a 2.8. I put in a 355HO heavily modified. i built the engine, put it in the car, got it all ready and then found out that I had missplaced my keys. IT has VATS. I called the GM dealership, gave them the VIN and they told me that anything earlier then 90 GM has destroyed the records for. I can't get the key codes the resistor values nothing. big help huh!!! anyway I was thinking about trying to solder in a resistor leading into the vats module to bypass the system. I was curious if anyone has done this or Knows if it works????

I also have a 86 trans am 305HO for a parts car, and i was wondering if I can take the ECM out of it and switch it with my 89 ECM. Then just cut the Vats completly out, since the 86 models weren't equipt with vats???

IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME FIGURE THIS ONE OUT IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECEATED!!!!!! THANKS

My son's '91 RS has/had VATS and the steering column was broken when we got it. We put an '88 Formula steering wheel in it, he got a chip from an earlier TBI 305 (prior to VATS) and we "permanently engaged" the relay just behind the kick panel on the driver's side floor. No issues since. You'd never know it ever had VATS.

You can do any of things we did, but I don't know if it will work if you don't do all of them.
