Inspecting an engine

Im about to go check out a 350 in my area that I plan on swaping out the 305 for. So I was just wondering whatI should look out for while checking out used motors. I know I should check for cracks, and make sure there no leaks of any kind. What else should I look out for? Im new to this so any info at all would be great. Thanks A lot!

If you're lucky, you'll be able to see it run. If not, there's not a whole lot you can look for. You're taking a chance, and the price should reflect that.

Tww more questions, Is it possible to tell if a motor is a roller by the outside of the engine? and How do you tell the difference betweena one peice and a two peice rear main seal engine? Im asking this bc Im looking fo r a roller and I heard that the chevy truck engines with one peice rear main seals were roller motors? Is this right? Sorry if these questions are dumb lol

before you go if he didn't tell you exactly what it is ask for the casting numbers so you know exactly what you have to work with, and if the price is right go check it out.

Look at the back of the block or check the casting numbers to see if it's a 1 piece or 2 piece block. About the only way to check if a 1 piece RMS block is finished for a factory roller setup is to take the intake off and look. Some will have roller cams, but some truck blocks may have flat tappet cams and will be missing the roller parts. Some truck blocks may not even have the finish machining done to take a roller cam.
