95 lt1 into 1988 2500 4x4

Engine is in, its out of a 95 camaro, with a 6 speed. Using the 5 speed that came with the truck which is a 4x4. Most of the stuff looks straightforward but im a little worried about the VSS. What does the VSS connector look like on the camaro harness? Do i just connect it to the tranny? Is my speed sensor the 40 pulse one that i need? Not using the ac, getting the pcm reprogrammed to kill the vats. What are the snags im going to run into? Thanks in advance!

VSS on the T56 is 17 pulses. The LT1 VSS is not tooth driven like the earlier VSS's, instead its using a magnet. Send a PM(private message) to member TexasLT1. He had a T5 on his LT1 for some time.

Here is a good link for common questions and answers about LT1 swapping:

I dont believe its a T5, this is the NV3500 in a 4x4. Has anyone used a t56 and a transfer case before?

I don't think it can be done... atleast not without an adaptor of sorts... Plus I'm not sure a T56 is the kind of trans you want for a 4x4. It's pretty much a close ratio 4 speed with 2 OD's. It's doable, but you would need really steep gearing to make it worth while IMO.

lt1 is a sweet engine for any vehicle however... a l98 is better suited for a truck. Also a t56 is better suited for a car. you really wont be able to use the 6th gear with big tires maybee even 5th unless its running really low gearing, lower than 4:10... if your run big rubber use a really low rear.

I imagine i need to splice into the wires going to the transfer case, as thats where actual mph would be calculated.

on the truck you also have to notch out the frame in order for the engine to fit in there. check out Full-Size Chevy - Main Index they have all kinds of information about that stuff, i was a member there and was going to do the swap until i bought the bird. good luck with the swap.

Also... just thinking about the transfer case...... You could do a devorced T-case setup, where the t-case doesn't actually bolt directly to the tranny... Some older fords used to be that way. But, then you're talking getting driveshafts re tubed, custum linkage, finding a t-case that will work and all that jazz. Could be done if you had the motivation and cash...

My PCM is getting reprogrammed, is it possible to get the programmer to program the PCM so the signal it gets from the transfer case is "manipulated", just like changing it for bigger tires etc?

pcmforless has said that since the pcm is from a 6 speed car, he will set the pulse rate to 40 (which is for the automatic) which should be the same for my older 1988 nv3500. So hopefully ill be able to just plug in my vss connector. Speaking of which, does anyone know what each of the 4 connectors do, and what colors they are etc, two of them are the same? what are those for? that goto the tranny? The pinout says stuff like "tranny connector" etc not to usefull.
