chevy 400 or L98?

Well their are a few good deals roaming around right now, and I have the money for them both so i need a little help deciding what to do..

68k original miles L98 bone stock with 700r4 and everything ill need for the swap, plus my headers and exhuast carry over, $850 delivered to my door.

or

chevy 400 ci , 2 bolt main stock rebuild with a few miles on it, th350 trans, and a few extra's, for $700

I also will have an oportunity to, hooker headers (long tubes i think), th400 and any thing else I want that comes off of a car, some one will be swapping a motor in, for free..

Well what do you like original looking stuff or modded? What do you want to do with her when she is done... daily driver, racer, etc.?? As for whatever parts you can get, I'd snag them up. You can always use them or help someone else out and make you a few bucks if you get em cheap enough.

I want something I can cruise on the streets, and go run 12's N/a high tens with like a 200 shot.

and then the next week, go autocrossing...

I bet I can only have one

Gonna need to drop some serious coin for that. Use the 400, . You will have different set ups to change out to met what you are doing that day, . I would suggest getting a 9 inch rear end with multiple third members to do the swapping there; as well you should get some type of adjustable suspension parts (i.e. shocks, struts, etc.) I'd be prepared for long sessions in tuning the chassis and drive train at each of the events that you spoke of. Hey go for it!!

The L98 with the LG4 induction and good exhaust will run circles around a stock rebuilt 400. The 400 has more potential, but as-is will be lame.

You'll have to be careful what parts are chosen if you're doing a SCCA sponsored autocross event. Too many mods might throw you into a class that's better suited for experienced drivers with dedicated autocross cars. The stock class (I believe "C") would allow some mods but that restriction would hurt you at the strip. So like Ironmahn says, you might have to go with different set-ups.

You might get by running a good autocross set-up and then disconnecting the front sway bar and running slicks at the strip.

The first thing that popped into my mind is
flat tappet 400cid
roller 350 cid with FI.
Were you getting the TPI with the 350 and using it, or sticking with LG4 induction? (swapping to TPI will be a bit of a hassle IMHO)

Tough choice. But as 57 mentioned, the stock 400 is a LAME boat anchor of a motor. Will you be modding either motor, and to what extent? The 400 will indeed have more potential at the end of the day (after many upgrades), but the L98 will be fastest right away.
