looking for help with a transplant
Hi guys! Just a short introduction before I ask my question. My name is Pat and I`m 58 years old have been a wrencher most all my life. I am a Electrcian by trade for nearly 40 years. I do love old cars and trucks.
Now to my question. Is there anyone out there willing to help coach me thru a transplant? I have bought a 1988 trans am with a 5.7 TPI that is a donor for my 1941 Chevy truck. I have the complete wiring harness and need info as to what can be eliminated and still have the engine run right.
I have a bunch of questions that need answering and I`m not up on new stuff so if you can help TIA. Pat (ps emission is not an issue with this custom job)

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org .
Unfortunately, you're going the wrong way with your transplant, so we'll have to tread carefully here in order to be of any use to you. The Board rules say it has to relate to 3rd gens, but we'll stretch that to allowing discussions that are 3rd gen related. Simply using the powerplant from a 3rd gen probably doesn't cut it.
Having said that, about all you can eliminate is some emissions-specific items such as the A.I.R. system and the catalytic converter. Everything else relates to the actual control of the induction and ignition, so you need all of the sensors and such intact and operating. Probably the biggest issue in your case is the vehicle speed sensor, which I believe in an '88 Trans Am would be on the transmission, so you're probably still okay as long as you use the transmission and get all of the harnessing and sensors from the donor car.
Your best bet for finding help on thirdgen.org is to search for threads that ask about emissions (smog) equipment removal, or carb to TPI conversions.

But is noted. Off list to me personally would be the best way to handle the process I would think. I have been searching the archives on this fourm but do have some questions and I figured if it had to do with the Firebird (third Gen) I proably had found the most knowldgeable folks on the web.
Figuring some of you guys were like some of the guys that I converse with on The Nova list about Off Topic stuff from now and again You would be willing to help a car enthusist!
If any are willing to post off this fourm to me personally I would be ever graetful.
