LT1 fit on 92' TH700R-4 (4L60) Tranny?

1992 Camaro Z28 : Will an LT1 fit with the 1992 Camaro's 700R4 (4L60) 4-speed with O/D automatic Transmission? What type of mod's do they need to do? How will the engine be at fitting into the 1992 engine bay?

I am looking at getting a stage ][ LT1 with fair idle and loped cam, (brand new engine), new chip..

My transmission was already overhauled with Kevlar bands, High Performance shift kit, all new bands and clutches...

With have stock 3:23 rear as I also drive on HWY (only put like 4,500km/year on car)...

I believe the LT1's external dimensions are the same as the Gen1 SBC.As for the the trans the 4L60's(the new designation GM gave the 700R4)bellhousing should bolt up since they were the automatics used behind the LT1.Actually I think the LT1 used the 4L60E(basically same trans but tied into the ECM).

The TH400's replacement is the 4L80E

There wasn't a TH400R4, it is a 700R4 which is what came in your car from the factory. It will bolt up to the LT1 however if you do a search you will see what has to be done to make it work. Using a '93 TB to hook up the TV cable, program out all of the tranny codes from the PCM and figure out how to make the VSS from the 700R4 work with the speedo without the old ECM being in the car. Best bet is buy an LT1 and 4L60E which will cure alot of the headaches you can run into.

Or you can run a '93 ECM but loose the ease of programming without having to burn chips, and the '93 ECM wasn't the best performer either.

The engine shop's headaches, not mine right? they will be doing it all. They keep the car for a 1 1/2 weeks..

Actually it will be yours when they tell you it's finished and the speedo isn't working.

And 1 1/2 weeks to do the swap? That alone just gives me the shivers. I could do it again, if I worked on it 8 hours a day, it would probably take me 1 1/2 weeks, maybe less since I've done it before. If they haven't done a swap like this before, you're probably looking more into about 3-4 weeks to have it done right.

What he means is the 700R4 speedo drive output is different than the one used by the LT1 ecm and therefore it won't be recognized and this will cause other issues. Your best bet is as Klortho said and to buy a 4L60E and then then you will need to reconvert the signal to the correct signal for your speedo so the ecm gets the correct info as well as your speedo

What Klortho means is if the shop is not competent they will install the engine with your trans and the engine won't work properly, then they'll realize they need to make a change to the output sensor on your trans so the ecm will get the correct signal, but then your speedometer won't work and you'll need to put another adapter onto that signal to reconvert it back to the original signal for the speedometer. Your ecm does not control the transmission shifting, the ecm for the LT1 however does control the trans shift points as well as needing the output signal from the trans so it knows how fast you are running to adjust shift points and advance settings. This is the different output sensor I was telling you about. If the shop has not discussed this with you, it may be advisable for you to ask exactly what they are planning to do to make everything work properly and I would do lots of reading of some of the older posts regarding Lt1 conversions so that you have a better understanding of what is actually involved. Good Luck!

Read through this thread

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...1+Transmission

Then you'll see what is involved, Firebat actually got it to work, but in the end said he would have went with a 4L60E had he to do over again.

The other thing I just remembered also is you will have to buy an aftermarket TCC lockup (for the torque converter to lockup) as well.
