Car with 350 Soon

Should be getting car back soon. The guy that built my motor told me he would also drop it in, for 400.00 I couldnt argue. He also ran into a problem and had to switch the tail off the 700r. (going from 700r to 350t and had to change tail for speedo) Only problem has been he races and spends all spare time on his car. This makes 4th weekend he has had it but he says just waiting on trans. Should be pushing a little over 400HP. Motor is really built and guy has a 8 sec Firebird he runs so he knows what he is doing.

If he didnt realize there would be a problem with the th350, that would kind of irk me. However, if he is utilizing the switch kit, it does take a little while to get the parts shipped and what not.

Re: Car with 350 Soon

That could be why he is not answering the phone. That sucks dude. Im not trying to scare you, but it will require a spacer to make it work. If it is a 9" tailshaft, i would think that you could get by with just the spacer and the 700tailshaft. However, if it is the short shaft th350, you will need to install the 700r4 output shaft and then the spacer and tailshaft to make it all work. otherwise you are looking at some aftermarket brackets for the torque arm, and a custom driveshaft. Either way, if the guy doing this work didnt know any of this, i would be highly suspect of anything else he has done.

Re: Car with 350 Soon

Week 6 or 7, I lost track. I went over there on Sat, last week. He was waxing his drag car and said he was taking break. The motor is in, not all sensors are hooked up, exhaust not hooked up, trans still out. The hood will not clear the setup now. I went back tue, to see if trans was in.......NO. Car had not been touched. Should have got a punk to do it then I could kick his ***!LOL I was walking around car, and it is a nice looking car. I am tepted to tow it out of there and take it somewhere to have trans installed. For you gurus, is it possible to use the 700 or will modifications have to be made. It is a 350, dont know what year or what it came out of.

Re: Car with 350 Soon

The 700r4 would be your best bet since it's an oem part for our cars. Having said that, to handle higher hp and racing you will need to beef it up somewhat. I don't have one myself, so I'll point you to this thread to help answer your questions:

Re: Car with 350 Soon

Went by shop today. Car still had not been touched. Told boss he would be there this weekend to get car out and was a no show. Boss told me he wanted my car out of there. Looks like I am going to get screwed. I have paid money for motor and trans, and paid part of install, but nothing is being done. May have to have car towed to my house and try to find someone to install trans.

I shutter whenever I hear someone say they are paying someone to do this kind of work. This is really a "hobby" type vehicle - in other words, it isn't primarly for transportation, it isn't an "investment", so major work that goes beyond the bounds of keeping it on the road are best done by the owner.

Any engine swap is smack in the middle of the defination of "hobby". Paying someone to do that kind of work is like paying someone to put together the ship model kit you bought.

You need a front end alignment? Custom exhaust work? Tires mounted? Install roll cage? Fine, that requires equipment that even hobbyists are likely to be able to justify, and perhaps skill that you may not have. Pay a shop to do that stuff.

$400 for an engine install should have been a warning - "If is sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Re: Car with 350 Soon

If I had the time and the space to do it I would not pay someone either. Living in a nieghborhood I do, I cant have a car strewn across my driveway. The engine install was a friend, until this all started. I would have paid more, but they said easy install, in and out over weekend. His boss said he is going to push him wed to get it out. Only thing left is trans, hook up exhaust and starter. Also some sensors. The sob also put some greasey parts in the back of the car on the 2 month old carpet.

Re: Car with 350 Soon

ok week 7 or 8. Havent talk to the guy in 2 weeks. His boss told him he wanted my car out of there by monday morning. The trans is back in it. Still alot of wires left over. Dont know if speedo will work. Car is on car stands. He was supposed to be changing tail of trans so speedo would work, but it looks the same. He has not returned my phone calls. After it was supposed to be ready 6 weeks ago, I dont think one call a week is excessive. The guy bragged what a good mechanic he was and how he has worked on soo many thirds. What an a$$hle. I will be glad to get car back.
