Yes they are killing you.
They are TBI "swirl-port" heads. Anti-performance.
"Vortec" is not connected in any manner, way, shape, or form with "roller engine". If you want to use those heads, there's no reason you can't; subject to making sure that you prep them sufficiently to avoid the retainers hitting the valve guides, if your cam has more than about .460" or so of lift. You cannot, however, retain that intake with those heads, because the intake ports are in the wrong place ("Vortec" being GM's marketing buzzword for "we moved the intake ports"). You'll hear about "drilling the bolt holes"; yeah, you can maybe get it to bolt up that way, but you'll entirely lose the benefit of the heads if the intake runners don't match up, and you may even find that the intake doesn't even cover the ports in the heads. You can keep the carb, if you really want that to keep your car from reaching its full potential.
See this thread for a pic of the mismatch.

Some other heads.
You asked about Vortec; I told you about Vortec. I accept no responsibility for paying for them. They don't GIVE away those heads, or the intakes that fit them. You wanna play, you gotta pay. Face it.
I would SURE AS HELL get those TBI heads off of there. Almost anything except maybe 70s smoggers like 882 or 624 or 993 castings would be better.
A set of non-TBI 305 heads would probably be the best cheeeep alternative. Look for 081 castings. People part with them for less than Vortecs since they don't have the buzzword thing going on for them, and they don't require a different intake.
