? about LT1 heads and intake

a freind of mine bought a set of milled, ported and polished factory casting LT1 heads with an intake for 400 bucks.
i know that you can modify an intake to go on an L98 or other gen 1, i know about the distributor and remote thermostat, etc, and i believe theres a thread on here where someone has actually swapped the heads onto an early block,

is this at all possible, to swap LT1 intake and heads onto an L98.
and if so what would it entail?

the car they came from made 380 rwhp, with a CC306, 58mm TB, long tubes, and custom tune.
i figure this is a nice set of mods for a thirdgen if possible.
thanks

Re: ? about LT1 heads and intake

OR....
the probably more cost/labor effective way,

would a modified LT1 intake bolt to iron vortec heads, because arent they very similar to LT1 heads, and can also be had for dirt cheap...?????

Re: ? about LT1 heads and intake

Modifying the LT1 heads would take quite a bit of machine work, the LT1 intake will not bolt up to Vortec heads.

Re: ? about LT1 heads and intake

now correct me if im wrong isnt the only difference on the vortec intake bolts, the middle two on each side???
i thought i'd heard of people boring/chamfering these bolt holes out to put a non-vortec manifold on vortec heads..?? or no?

and lastly, what about a set of vortecs made by like EQ, i think they have both old style intake bolts and vortec style...... or am i totally outta the park on this one?

Re: ? about LT1 heads and intake

RHS makes a set of vortecs:

Pro Torker™ Vortec heads come standard with radiused, hardened exhaust seats, multi-angled intake seats, and “Fast Burn” 64cc or 67cc combustion chambers. To ensure maximum versatility, Pro Torker™ Vortec heads feature dual pattern intake compatibility to allow use with virtually any intake manifold, early or late.

now wouldnt this be a decent combo?
64cc vortecs, milled for around 10.5:1, a decent Hyd. roller cam, LT1 manifold, TB, and headers.

i know more power could prob be made witha 4bbl buttt, this would be nice w/ the drivability/fuel economy of EFI

Re: ? about LT1 heads and intake

Straight off of the LT1intake site

Will the LT1 intake fit Vortec heads?

No, it will not fit. The intake mating flange is too narrow to cover the tall ports that the Vortec head uses. Here's a cutaway picture with a standard SBC intake mated to Fastburn heads. Fastburn heads are drilled with both standard SBC and Vortec bolt patterns.

The LT4 intake will not fit Vortec heads either. This is due to the Vortec bolt pattern being way too high on the head for the intake. The LT4 intake can be adapted to Fastburn heads because they are drilled for both standard and Vortec bolt patterns. So an LT4 intake would still require a bolt pattern change to std gen1. Some port matching on the LT4 intake will be required when using Fastburn heads.

Re: ? about LT1 heads and intake

How much better do the LT-1 heads flow compared to L-98,083 or 113 heads?

Re: ? about LT1 heads and intake

The LT1 heads are totally different than standard SBC heads since the LT1 was reverse cooled, they don't have the water passages at the end of the heads. As for flow numbers, I honestly couldn't tell you that, but they have smaller cc's which pulls compression up to the 10.5:1 that the LT1's have. Plus they're aluminum (Vette and F-body versions) or Iron (all the other mid 90 LT1's)

These heads are different than the ones on the old '70 model LT-1 which was just a standard SBC.

Re: ? about LT1 heads and intake

stock aluminum LT1 heads have a 170cc intake port and flow as follows:

valve lift intake exhaust
.100 72 53
.200 129 101
.300 180 136
.400 213 155
.500 214 165
.600 215 171

stock production vortec iron heads 170cc intake port

.100 70 49
.200 139 105
.300 190 137
.400 227 151
.500 239 160
.600 229 162

stock production L98 tpi aluminum head 163cc intake port
(sorry don't have numbers for the iron head)

.100 56 49
.200 120 96
.300 160 123
.400 186 140
.500 196 155
.600 199 159

The lt1 heads aren't real complicated to install on a 1st gen small block, I'm currently doing a set myself. Just cut some aluminum to block the four reverse flow ports, have it welded in place and have the head decked. Then drill and tap some holes to relieve the coolant to the remote t-stat. I went with these over vortec for two reasons: one, they are aluminum and two, the big advantage of the LT1 intake (which is easier to put on an lt1 head, obviously)
