What are the best heads for a 350 TPI build up?
What are the best heads for a 350 TPI build up?
Hi, this is the first time I have ever posted. Here's my situation: I have an 89' RS I bought recently, and it has a v6. I have an older 350 crate motor in which I plan to equip with a TPI. The block is nothing special, 350 goodwrench, with 4 bolt main, 2 pc rear main seal. I am not having any issues with the short block, I know what I need there. I would really appreciate some help on choosing the best heads (that will fit my block) for the TPI. Eventually I would like to produce aprox. 350-400 horses with this motor. I have 2 sets of heads right now. They are 76cc heads that came with the crate motor. Again nothing special. And I know they are not what I want for making the best power. I have been told Vortech heads, but I don't know if they will fit my block? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! I have my block # if this will help...Please let me know! Thanks!!!! Strykerbus17

First, welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
Now, any Gen I small block Chevy head will fit the block. So, as long as it isn't LT1/4 or LS1/6, the head will fit. That includes Vortec heads.
So, what's the "best" head? That's too open-ended. You can get pretty expensive, but if you aren't doing a maxed-out TPI build, then Vortec is probably your best bet. They will require a Vortec-specific TPI base, though.
If you're willing to shell out the bucks, I'd recommend considering this package http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD806...keHeaders.aspx . Will handle decent valve lift, has the base, gaskets, bolts, etc., to do the install. Stock Vortecs can only handle about .450" lift (some better) safely, these are modified for about as much lift as you're likely to ever want with TPI.

right now a buddy of mine is useing a set of trickflows with 64 cc chambers and that thing is bad ***. AFR have the best flowrates according to a lot of people , but unless you are going to build a full on race motor i dont think they are nessary.
it depends on what you are going to be doing with it. my local speed shop loves tickflows and i havent heard a lot of complaints about them

I have a set of the 062 heads with the big spring package myself. They're about to get bolted to a 383. I ditched my TPI for a Holley Stealth Ram EFI setup though. They oughtta get me over 400hp with my 383. Your horsepower goals should be feasible with the Vortec heads, a decent cam, headers, and a some intake work.

vortech heads, high flow vortech TPI base, high flow runners, ported plenum, 24lb injectors, GM hot cam, 1.6 roller rockers, 52mm throttle body, some minor chip work but a stock one will work fine, 1 5/8 longtubes and a good low restriciton exhaust and at the motor u'll be putting out 355hp 427ftlbs with out the exhaust upgrades and chip work...guessin with those u'll be around 365-370hp and 435-445ftlbs.
they did the same build in chevy high performace a few years ago.
