Re: Building a SBC 383

Just a quick reply.
The cam should be based on your heads flow numbers, and power potential at specific lift. You want your cam to start making power when your heads do and wind out to when they stop flowing good numbers. Then really about how radical/lumpy you want the duration.
Maybe list your head type and some specs.

Re: Building a SBC 383

a 650 should be enough for a decent sized cam(under 240* and .500 lift).. i ran a 650 edelbrock on my first motor and that bastard made TORQUE all over the rpm range.. but hit a wall at 5700.. literally straight down power drop.. but i was running a 294S solid flat cam.. .525/.525 and 248/248 @.050" supposed to be 2500-6500 range.. but made power from 1200up..

one more thing, how much power you looking to get out of this?? and how fast do you want to spend??

Re: Building a SBC 383

i probably want to spend about 3000-3500 dollars for parts and im hoping for something like 400 and 450 hp
so far im getting the block for 250, the stroker kit is 500, the carb is like 425, the manifold is like 210, and i was planning like 1200-1400 on assembled aluminum heads so thats 2700 and i need cam an oil pan strong pushrods and all that stuff

Re: Building a SBC 383

this was my first build..
350 block--$750
stroker kit--$800
EPS manifold--$140
650cfm thunder AVS--$350
milodon oil pan-- $200
ARP bolts, main studs, head studs--$300
gasket set--$80
comp cams k-kit(cam, lifters, springs, retainers, locks, timing set) plus pushrods--$400
camel back heads(ported and polished by my dad-free labor)--$30
all machine work and head assembly work--$700
timing cover--$100

thats minus headers, exhaust, clutch, accessories, filters, oil, etc, etc, etc...

total comes to $3750ish.. if my quick math was right.. theres alot of short cuts that you could take too.. you dont have to get top of the line stuff like i did.. it was an enginekits.com stroker as well.. but i got the upgraded rods, bolts and forged pistons.. you dont need all that unless you want serious power.. and you can reuse bolts, you can also get an oil pan for a 1/4 of a milodon.. 3500 is very do-able..

Re: Building a SBC 383

with no carb tuning other than a few screws turned, it laid down 316rwhp and 359rwtq on 92octane..

i added an edelbrock 800 afterwards and i pulled off a 12.76 @107 on a set of hard slicks.. first run ever with slicks, weak burnout (not even a puff of smoke), spinning past the tree while missing 4th gear..

from all those online hp calculators, with the 316rwhp/359rwtq, i should have running been that on a good run(no miss-shifts).. i coulda been to loooooow 12's with a good 60ft and solid shifting.. thats about 425hp-ish

If the only thing you are getting is a block, or if it is non-running, i would tell the friend to get hosed on the 250 for a 350. That is a crappy price.

Re: Building a SBC 383

Bigpoppa08, pick up the latest issue of Super Chevy.. it should be the June 2007 issue.. there is a silver camaro on the cover with MUSCLE in big orange letters under it..

there is an article on the "cheapest 383 yet".. it is similar to the stuff i had.. enginekits.com stroker kit, ARP bolts, etc, etc.. it shows you the shortblock build and all the steps to make it happen..

GET IT
