Vette and F body L98's: Same or Diff?

I think im gonna say screw the LS1 swap and just throw in the old L98 TPI w/ a few power modifications of course...My question thou is if i can take it out of a 86 vette and hook it up to my 700r4? I know the mounts might be different but its the same engine isn't it? Or do i need to take it out of a F body of that year range?

The Vette oil pan won't fit in the 3rd gen chassis (from what I understand - haven't done it myself).

You need a 3rd gen ("normal") style oil pan and oil pump pick-up.

But he's asking about an '86 Corvette TPI. Those have iron heads (except for a limited number that got the aluminum) and are a direct swap for f-body heads. Keep in mind the 86 and older heads with perimeter bolt valve covers have a different intake bolt angle than the 87 and newer with center bolt valve covers. Also, the 87-91 Corvette TPI heads have the 86 and older style intake bolt angle.

I was just using an 86 because that was the engine that i had found to see what kind of price i would be dealing with. I guess my real question would be what year vette L98 would be the best/easiest to use if i cant find an f body one with the right oil pan, etc.

as far as the oil pan thing I'm really not sure, all the vette guys told me I couldnt swap the pan from my maro to my vette (I swapped the whole engine) because of some issue with the vette pan sitting farther back or something and was told I needed a "special vette oil pan". Being the kind of guy I am I figured screw it and tried anyway and ran into no problem.. the pan fit fine with the vette crossmember and doesnt hang down below it or anything and didnt come into contact with anything. Don't take this as gospal or anything though becasue I'm not even sure if I had a factory f-body oil pan.. it was given to me by my votech instructor 5 years ago or better and he wasn't sure what it was from.. If you'd like I can measure it for you tomorrow and give you the dimensions of the pan, I know for a fact it will fit either body.

Re: Vette and F body L98's: Same or Diff?

I dropped a 1990 vette shortblock in mine ... you have to use a F-body oil pan ... as stated by other the oil pump pickup is also different and you must remove the vettes windage tray ... then just bolt everything else up to the vette engine.different thingswater pumpharmonic balanceroil panflywheel is specific to the vette as well

Re: Vette and F body L98's: Same or Diff?

Why would the water pump be different? it's reverse flow just like f-body l98 isnt it? And just curious whats different about the balancer and flexplate? Just wondering becasue I just reused most of the camaro stuff except for the water pump, I had a standard rotation for my v-belt setup and had to switch to a reverse rotation pump due to the serp system.. is the pump itself shorter or something? I never took the time to notice..

The aluminum heads showed up in "86-1/2" Vettes - how many they made, I haven't heard.

Also not sure when Vette went SD. They got LT1's in '92.

Corvette went to SD in 1990, same as the f-body.

That's what I figured, but wasn't sure (Vette's tended to have little stuff done to them that didn't always carry over to the f-bodies).

As for the water pump, not completely sure, but I believe they are different as well.

The vette has a a different water pump than a F-car. The vette has a shorter, larger diameter shaft. The pulley from an f-car has a 5/8" hole in it and is meant for a long water pump. The vette has its own length which is shorter and has a 3/4" diameter shaft.

Re: Vette and F body L98's: Same or Diff?

Thanks for the explination on the water pump, figured it was something along those lines, I'm still curious what makes the oil pan, flexplate, and balancer different.. just wanna know for myself since the only thing I used on the vette that didnt come from the camaro were obviously the headers, the water pump, motor mounts, and I switched to a shorter intake since I wanted to be able to close the hood.. everything else remains the same except for the serp setup which came with the vette..
