BBC swap ?

My project is coming along slow but steady. I was wondering what some of the guys who have already done a swap have used for front springs? The bb is a 402 60 over with the cast heads (for now). Any insites would be great

Re: BBC swap ?

If you're looking for something at the auto parts store, I'd recommend the MOOG springs for the IROC with all accessories. You will drop a little below stock height until you put aluminum heads on. For sure run an aluminum intake.

I think Summit sells BBC springs for third gens but I'm not sure how they handle. I think they're for drag racing.

Re: BBC swap ?

I yanked out my old IROC springs and was using uncut V6 springs for a few years. near the start of the 2007 season, I finally installed some Moroso trick springs designed for the BBC and installed them uncut.

With aluminum heads and as much weight removed from the front of the car as possible, the front weight of my car wasn't much more than a fully equipped SBC street car. I have around 1850 pounds on the front axle.

Re: BBC swap ?

I've never used a mechanical fuel pump but the BBC pump is different than a SBC pump if you do intend to use a mechanical pump. Edelbrock makes a very good mechanical pump.

Electric is whatever brand you want. The smaller street versions like the Holley red pump are already regulated to 7 psi. The larger ones such as the Holley blue need a regulator. Carter, Holley, Mallory, Barry Grant all make good pumps. It just depends what you want and how much you want to spend. You're going to want to upgrade to 3/8" fuel line from the tank to the carb. The factory 5/16" (or smaller) line isn't large enough to supply enough fuel.

The factory supply line is 3/8". The return line is 5/16".

I am getting ready to put a 402 bb in a 84 camaro, you have started. Can you e-mail me what you have had troubles with so far, IE headers, making the 402 fit? Any advice would help. It would be nice if someone would come up with a confertion kit? Like they have for a v-8 vega. Built that one now sold it and doing same thing with this z-28? Please help me if you can.

Re: BBC swap ?

If youve increased the weight of the front end and you want to keep a stock ride height you should get the moog 5664s, they have a 750lb spring rate vs the stock IROC springs (5662s) which have a 700lb spring rate. It will help handle the extra weight of the BBC. Then u cant cut them to get the ride height you want.

Ive done the 5664 conversion from my stock WS6 springs in my bird. I cut off 1.5 coils for a drop close to the sportlines but much higher spring rate. I had a 383 with aluminum heads and a HSR. But Im about to start up my new motor 521cuin BBF which is a frigin MONSTER! I have aluminum heads though (weigh only 44lbs compared to the 90lb stock iron heads EACH!) also aluminum intake over iron helped. From what Ive read is that my BBF should weigh in around the same weight as a SBC with iron heads etc. So i will see how my cut moog 5664s are when the cars weight is on the tires soon.

Pumps, i dont like mechanical! my brothers 509 merlin had a mechanical pump and he had fuel issues... he took the fuel pump off to find that the fuel pump pushrod wore away the fuel pump lobe and then lodged itself between the lobe and the block. Hes now converted to electrical after i talked him into it and couldnt be happier. Im also running 3/8" hardline to -6AN to my regulator with 255lph walbro high pressure pump intank and that goes to my holley 950DP. Im also running 3/8" return line to the tank but it still has the stock 5/16" line coming out of the tank. I hope i have enough line volume to run my 550hp BBF ill run another line for the nitrous eventually.

If your going to run a electric pump u might as well nip it in the but and run -8an or 1/2" line so you wont ever have to worry about fuel line again.
