Questions about 305TPI to 350TPI swap
Questions about 305TPI to 350TPI swap
I have an automatic 86 IROC that had a rebuilt 350 Jasper Engine put into it about 6 yrs ago. Unfortunately, the owner had some of the original 305 parts put on the 350 (19lb injectors, knock sensor, prom chip) these are just a few that i know of. The car ran ok with the 305 parts although it seemed to run a bit rich.
I have recently put 22 lb injectors, and changed the 305 knock sensor to a 350. Because they didn't put 350s in the 86's, what year prom chip can i expect to work? I have a stock prom chip for an 89 camaro that i have tried, and when i try to start the car, sometimes it will turn over one time and go dead. I haven't tried changing the ESC module yet. Is it possible that the ESC module is causing it to behave the way it is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry, i know there are a lot of posts out there like this. Im kind of in the dark on this stuff. The ECM that i have is the original so its from an 86 camaro. Everything i read says change the konck sensor, the prom chip, the injectors, and the ESC module. Is there a specific year 350 prom that will work with this setup? Is there a specific 350 knock sensor or ESC module that i will need to get? I don't know if these parts are specific to the ECM or not.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
You have to change both the knock sensor, mounted on the block in front of the starter, and the knock sensor module, located on the firewall in the rear driver's side corner. The ESC module in the distributor would be different because '86 still used the large coil-in-cap distributor, and '87-up were small cap with separate coil.
'87-'88 L98 chips would be correct for a 350.

Cause I've got the same problem, a '86 where the last owner swapped to a newer 350 from a 305, and left most other parts...
I was starting to look for a new distributor, but it's hard to find a distributor for a 350 engine to match a '86 (since they don't exist, hehe)
and I'm about to change Knock Sensor and the ESC module on the firewall as well..
Do I have to change the injectors and prom? or will it run ok with the 305 stuff? (not as well of course)
(P.S. Sorry if I'm a bit "slow", but I'm swedish, so i'm not as good at english as you guys...)

After changing to 22 lb injectors, an 87 350 prom, a 350 knock sensor, and a 350 ESC module, the car now runs. The problem now is that it is running very rich. Pours white smoke out the exhaust...
What is the best way to attack this problem?

White smoke isn't rich, it's water.
