91 TBI to 350 Carb question
Ive searched many times and havent come up with much for the 91/92 bodys (someone along the years told me they had a different wiring harness than the earlier years). My car is also a manual, it seems like everyone here has an auto and is wanting to know about TV cables and TC lock up. With what little info I could come up with, I'm taking it as I wont need ANY of the wiring that is in the car now. I have my 350 about 75% built and getting ready to drop her in. My car has AC now but that is coming off along with the smog pump.
Can anyone let me know if im on the right track and let me know any info that might help.
Thanks
John

You're on the right track (except for your Board filter by-pass).
You will need the wiring for the distributor/coil, alternator, oil & temp gages. You might have to reterminate the ignition wiring, depending upon what distributor you use.

Re: 91 TBI to 350 Carb question
I knew about the sensors, they are the sending units too (right?), so with NO computer, the stock gauges(as long as the sensors/sending units are hooked up) will work. What about the speedo since I have the electronic, not manual gauge as in the earlier years?
As for the distributer, I just need a vac advance HEI. The tach gets wired up there.
And alternator, what goes on with that? Do I need a 1 wire one, or will the one I have now work?
BTW, I'll probably never hear the end of this, but whats the Board filter by-pass?

You can hook up everything you need with the wires that are under the hood now. Leave the alternator and gage senders (not the computer "sensors") alone - they are in a separate harness, so no need to touch them. Wires that are on your coil now will go to the HEI, so you may have to re-terminate those wires. If your carb has an electric choke, you will need to find or route a wire that has 12 volts when the ignition is on - it's not a good idea to tap off of the distributor power for that function.

Re: 91 TBI to 350 Carb question
(sorry about the filter thing) But I thought that on the 87 up cars had 1 harness insted of the 2. What I was thinking was keep the gauges, run a my own wires for main power, starter(push button), fuel pump, ignition. If I were to do that, would i be able to completely remove the computer. How will the fan work, will I need a switch for that too? I want as little wires as possible, so if pulling the whole harness is possible, I would like to. Now I know anything is possible, but I would like to keep stuff working too (without re-wiring the whole car) Stuff like brake lights, headlights. This is still going to be a daily driver.

I've never dealt personally with EFI, but from what I hear on this Board, the two harnesses are still basically there.

Re: 91 TBI to 350 Carb question
I havent got to the actual swap yet. I still need to figure out what to do with the exhaust. <--- any help with that would be nice too. I just finished my engine this weekend (other than paint, valve and timing chain covers)
I was just planning on splicing a switch in the line and cross my fingers. although one of them controllers would be nice to let it run while the car is off.
sounds to me like something elso is wrong, like a bad fan motor. Jumping to it directly should turn it on..I would think?

Re: 91 TBI to 350 Carb question
All the gauges, even the speedometer will still work.... even with no computer in the car. I did the swap last year, and I came across 2 things to make sure of. There is a ground wire on the back of the engine to the body.... necessary for inside electrical to function properly (I forgot it). And it is easier to hook up everything you need on the new engine, then remove all the wires you don't need. Everything should work with the wiring, just turn the key and go.
The exhaust is quit restrictive. There are to many options to list. I have a dynomax dual kit for an 89 camaro on mine.... depends on taste.
Yes the fan controller is good. I had my relay wired to the ignition for a while, but I got one from summit, along with a dual fan setup.
