PLEASE HELP!!!! REPLACING BLOWN 350CI IN 91 Z28 WITH OLDER CARB MOTOR!!!!
I posted this under a other title but only one person replied so I am posting under a different title so I can get some more help!!!
Well here is my problem I bought a 1991 tpi 350 Z28 that I was going to fix up, It did not start and the starter was jamed so I took a look under the car and I saw no signs of any major damage so I bought it well when I removed the starter I found a out ward den in the oil pan and a hole well the motor threw a rod (so much for people being honest when selling something, the guy said he parked it running, right sure you did)
Anyways here is my question a friend of mine has a 350 that has been freshly rebuilt and has a xe265h comp cams and the heads have been pocket ported, the only thing is that the heads are the carb stile heads, I was wondering if I could still use the older heads with my tpi intake, I herd that you could but you would have to drill out the intake manifold holes to bolt it down??
I would like to keep it tpi!!!!
I also have a sb 400ci that I could rebuild and use or could I ??
What would be a better choice ??
Help with this would be greatly appreciated!!!! and if there are any other problems I might encounter when I try to do this would you please let me know!!!!
THANKS!!!!

Never heard of an XE265 cam. Perhaps XE262 or XE268.
Anyway, take the heads off of the 350 in the car, have them freshened up, and put them on whatever engine you put back in. If the 400, drill the steam holes using the 400 head gasket as a template.
The odds of those "pocket ported" heads on the older 350 being better than your L98 heads are about 1 in 100. The odds for the 400 heads are even worse (like, stock 400 heads don't hold a candle to L98 heads, even if pocket ported).
An alternative to elongating the bolt holes in your '91 base is to get a Vette base - it'll have all of the bolt holes at 90 degrees like the old heads. If you use the 400, the TPI is going to need help, anyway.
But, using your L98 heads is a sure shot.

Sorry it is a xe268h comp cams, Thanks for the info, what else should I know?
So the L98 heads are better than the old stile heads, the 350 with the xe268h cam is suppose to produce 325-350hp (about 9 to 1 comp) does that sound about right, and if i was to use vortec heads it should bump it up to 400hp, that is what my friend built the engine to produce by the specs he followed, does all this sound right?
So what power would I be looking at if I use my L98 heads
THANKS!!!!

I suppose I should have said to post the casting #'s off the older 350 heads. That will tell all.
You should be able to exceed 350 horse with a properly-supported 350 w/XE268H cam. TPI will cut that down some.
Vortecs would be an improvement, but would require a Vortec-specific base. Or something like Mini Ram or Super Ram.
