stock 305 beef up...
I have an 83 Pontiac T/A, stock 305, 5 speed, 140,000 miles. I'm doing a paint job and want to beef up the motor. Im deffinetly going to pull all the emissions crap off the car. Any good cheap ideas?

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
Do you have the LG4 carb, or cross-fire 305? Makes a little difference.
Check out the FAQ forum for a thread that talks about the differences between 305's and performance upgrades.
Careful what you call "crap". If you have a carb, the computer controlled unit is very capable of performance, driveability, and economy, out-distancing the non-computer versions in every category.
If you have CFI, you have a little more work ahead of you.

That would be cross fire injection, which is two throttle body injectors. Looks a little like carb, but isn't.
There really isn't much performance support for that system. A carb conversion may be your best bet. You need to look over the EFI to carb tech article linked from the thirdgen.org homepage, and the FAQ thread I already mentioned. A Holley 600 double pumper is what you should be considering, since you have a 5-speed.

Okay, follow the FAQ thread recommendations for performance upgrades.

Re: stock 305 beef up...
Try to find a quadrajet to swap on,if its not injection remove all emissions equipment, a good muffler and an air cleaner for a 350, you can easily make some cheap power like that just try to get more air in and more exhaust out, I haven't dyno tested it but on my 86 w/ weird computer controlled quadrajet by adding a 350 air cleaner magnaflow muffler removing the cat and disconnecting the smog pump it really felt like it opened the car up allot if you want to invest a little more id imagine the stock smog-tastic exhaust manifolds are very low performance, you could replace with headers or non smog manifolds very cheap if you hunt around for used parts. for about $20 you can get an exhaust cutout and put it after your Y pipe to open up to straight pipes when the cops aren't listening.
basicly because you want to do it on the cheap said your best bets are playing with the air intake and exhaust IMO

Vortec heads, CompCam XE274-H cam, Performer RPM Vortec Intake, 650/700cfm carb, headers, cat back and you are bumpin' 300hp.

The 305 is already low compression... vortec heads would drop it even further. I would try a good flowed set of 58cc heads, but other than that i have to agree with the last post. 300hp would be very possible.

Geez, just that little bit of stuff could bump an LG4 to 300hp? What about an LO3, or should I just give up and get a 350?

Re: stock 305 beef up...
Yes it does, but that's at the crank not wheels and the max hp will be roughly in the mid - high 5000rpm range.
