Small Block 400 in Third Gen

Okay, so I was considering throwing this 400 in my T/A as some of you may remember. The T/A has been sold to someone whom was in the market for restoring such a car, so that leaves me with the 400 and my '86 Z28.

My question basically remains the same, except for the small fact that my Z28 has a 5 speed, not a 700R4. Now my problem here being that I can not for the life of me find a 153 tooth flywheel for a 400. Atleast not one that doesn't cost less than $350!

Any one know where I can get one for fairly cheap? Any help and comments welcome. Thanks.

You aren't going to find one cheap. You're talking about a non-production configuration, therefore specialty, therefore expensive.

You might be able to get a neutral balance 2-piece rear main seal 153 tooth flywheel and get a machine shop to unbalance it for you. That'll probably add up to less than $350 - like $349.95.

How exactly would that help? Most likely it would be 168-tooth, and it would be neutral balance.

Re: Small Block 400 in Third Gen

i thought the 307 flywheel was smaller. my brother has a 307 laying around and its flexplate for an automatic is smaller than the one on my 350.

just a suggestion!

Flexplate/flywheel size has nothing to do with the engine. Except for 400, any SBC could have either one. Depends more on the vehicle it's installed in than the engine itself.

But, T5's were all 153 tooth.

Re: Small Block 400 in Third Gen

A local driveline/clutch shop should be able to get you a balance plate that sandwiches between the flywheel and the crank and adds the proper balance weight. They cost around $50,I've used them without any problems. If you can't get one locally,PM me,and I'll get you the # at my local shop, they can ship you oneBTW,you sure you want that kind of torque on a T5?

Re: Small Block 400 in Third Gen

Centerforce makes one, at least they used to a few years back, when I had my 400SBC 83 'bird. I think it was around $400 though...
