ideas here. thats all
hey all, just joined (woot) and am looking for advice here on an engine i have.
i have an 85 IROC camaro with a 350 in it.
the 350 was put in by the previous owner, and it was done pretty badly.
the main problem i have is that the rings arent seating or something.
i dont know the exact problem, but this thing has blowby like you wouldnt believe.
if the dipstick isnt tied down, it comes out when you drive it.
so heres my thinking.
to fix the rings, i need to take out the engine, and take the whole bottom end out.
since gas prices are eating me alive, i was thinking that since i will have the crank out anyway, what would be the harm in destroking my 350 to a 302.
now i know that most of you are thinking that i must be crazy, but hotrod magazine did a build like this and got 550 hp and 25 mpg on pump gas... yes, in the same motor...
theirs was a 302 with 2.06/1.6 valves and a super conservative cam, TPI and a centrifugal supercharger.
look it up.
i already have the 2.06/1.6 heads and TPI.
i would basically need a 3" crank and possibly a new cam.
supercharger of course.
do you think its worth it, or should i not bother.
honestly, it would be fun, and i would find it fun to be running a similar engine to the original Z-28 IROC cars in 67-69...
$$$ is the limiting factor here.
thanks

Welcome. And a good way to start. Please let me know how much it would cost because 25 mpg with 550 hp is what I am talking about.
